how can you buy an australian death cert?

can anyone explain to me how you go about ordering an australian death cert? are the laws different over there and is there an equivalent of our gro?

is there something similar to free bmd to check the details?

any suggestions would be most appreciated

Hi Florence, I think on Tony's Oz thread he explains about transcription agents. I use a company called "Joy Murrin". If you google the name you will find their web site.

Briefly what you need to do is to check the BDM indexes find out the index number and then send those details via email to the transcription agent, tell them how much of the certificate you need to see, for example, all, or several lines or just one piece of information. The cost depends on what you want.

Some states are easier to search than others. If your person is from NSW, Queensland or Victoria you are laughing. If from South Australia or WA it is a bit more difficult.

Check the dates available for research on Tony's site. You can not acquire certificates outside a certain time span.

The Registry has accredited Transcription Agents who are able to provide genealogists with full transcriptions, partial transcriptions or verification of certain fields of a birth, death or marriage record.
Transcription Agents are particularly useful when you do not need full-certified copies of a birth, death or marriage certificate but just want the information in order to be able to continue your research.
Fees vary according to the request
