I agree with Jean and actually prefer to see my account in credit when the bill arrives. In fact, I'm not bothered if it gets in the black to around two months worth of payments, in fact in Summer I prefer it to be that way.

Most companies computer systems are now able to monitor your consumption over at least one if not two years these days, so they have a pretty good idea how much you consume, quarter by quarter. They can also see the history of your payment account too, over this period and if arrears are becoming a feature, especially at the times when your consumption is the lowest, will automatically ask for an increase.

You don't have to increase your standing order / direct debit payment if you don't wish to, but don't complain if you are asked to settle any arrears in one go some months later.

At best you will be asked to pay off the arrears over the next two quarters or so, which could have the effect of even doubling your payments if you are not careful, as you will be expected to pay both the arrears and the full amount of what you are using - a double whammy....! This actually happened to someone I know....! Not nice.

Jean, it would be better to pay the asked amount but put away any extra in an account somewhere that paid a little interest, even if not much it's better than giving the power companies your money to gain interest on. Also you'd have a little nest egg as it grows to pay for anything unexpected or a treat!

I like to keep my standing orders a little higher than necessary, then I can get a nice cash refund as a boost to my funds!

I was with Scottish Power (nice young lady that sold it to me) rate was cheaper than British Gas who I was with at time. After a year I had a phone call about 9 p.m at night very agressive lady said we are increasing your standing order from £50 to £100, I said I don't think so, I am back with British Gas and very happy. Who knows who I will be with next time lol.

I got a efund of £100 for my electricity, but still thay want me to pay the same amount monthly!! I pay more in standing orders for my gas now than I ever did on prepayment meter. That's with Hydro.

nearly 3 times more than Scottish Power. So guess what I've done!
I had questioned my gas bill, as it was a heavy one, and more than it was when I was on prepayment meter. Shows it pays to shop around.
