Are you on facebook?

I have just seen this posting reminding users that your privacy could be affected by changes being made on Friday.

ATTENTION: Friday, Facebook will become owner of the publishing rights of ALL your private photos. You need to make a simple change: go to 'account', 'account settings', 'facebook adverts'(along the top), 'ads shown by third parties', choose 'NO ONE' then SAVE. 2 minutes' job. And please Share share share. (for those who haven't done this yet..)

That means that any of your photos "could" be used by fb in advertising, or by third parties, without your knowledge.

It's very easy to make this change.

quote from same page

"A note about your personal information
Despite what you may have heard, Facebook does not give your personal information to advertisers — including your name, profile picture or any of your photos."

Thankyou Sylvia

Yes, Mildred

BUT, apparently the rules are being changed as of tomorrow

I don't know about you, but I wish to be certain that I don't suddenly see any of my very few photos appearing in ads.

Playing it safe, if you like.

Why can't Facebook just leave things alone. This is going to put a lot of people off joining and others, like me, wondering whether it's worth continuing to be a member.

Wend

I never have trusted Facebook

We have a Privacy Commissioner in Canada, and 2 or 3 years ago she started a court case against FB, because the lack of privacy restrictions on there contravened Canada's laws.

as a result of that, FB made some changes, the case never went to court ....... and we can change settings on FB to somewhat control our privacy

I always said that I would never join FB, largely because of all these concerns ..... but then GR started making announcements on its wall, so I joined

I have my privacy settings set as high as they will go ............ but it isn't really private!

Sylvia, I have all my privacy settings on 'Friends Only'. I cannot understand, therefore, why (or how) it is not that and only that. Why do they meddle? Grrr!

11.10 pm here, by the way :-)

This is about the third time this warning has come up. If used carefully there are very few problems with FB. Have you tried googling your name? Posts from this site will often come up.

Does anybody know if the stuff I had on FB when I was a member for a few months is still visible, even though I am no longer a member?

I wonder if you can put a statement on your page saying 'All items on this page are copyright to (and then your FB name)'.

I just went to FB and didnt 're-join', just put in my email address and password as if I was still a member and it took me straight to my page and sent me an email welcoming me back! At least I dont have any of my photos on there. It disturbed me though, the number of people who are listed as having 1, 2, or 3 'mutual friends'. Some of those people are complete strangers to me, in fact some have very foreign names, so I am not sure who the mutual friends are, as I have only 4 that I have connected with in the past. I havent deleted my account at present, I will just wait a while to see what happens.
