I already have full access to Ancestry.com.au but I am keen to know if it would be worthwhile upgrading my subscription to GR to platinum to take advantage of their records.

Any thoughts welcomed

I do not believe there is anything on GR which Ancestry does not have.

I will bow to a greater knowledge however I believe the way GR works is that it sources its records from elsewhere.

My answer to your question would be no. It does need to be a personal choice which some people take.

you may think the search engine is better .............. but did you realize that you cannot move from one page to another on the GR census .......... so if your family is split between 2 pages, you can't follow them.


Many of their other records (bmds, for example) are indexes. not the actual registration information, so it is difficult to find the spouse.

The tree facilities on GR are great: nice routine for building tree, sharing with other people etc.
I recently took out an FmP sub for doing the actual research: never looked back. The power of the search system is fantastic, although ironically, for those years which it now covers, Freebmd has a much neater way of displaying the BMD results, and as it says on the tin, it's free! The FmP subscription will probably have to go on my mortgage.
Just a word of caution: if you read the small print on FmP one of the things you have agreed is not to do searches for other people! I think this is intended to stop mass use by several people using just one subscription, not just a friendly bit of response to enquiries and calls for help, but it does make one a bit nervous.

The Genealogist is another site which expressly forbids doing look-ups for others. If you are caught and can't prove they were all for your own personal use they can charge you £5 for each look-up you have made, yes £5 for each look-up.....! It is there in the T's and C's.....!

P.S it doesn't matter if GR source their info from a third party - what does matter is what you are getting for your money. In any case I would have thought that they use FMP as their source for much of it..

Aren't GR and FmP both owned by the same company? Rupert Murdoch or Randolf Hurst.... ? The material looks pretty similar in some of the databases.

GR and FMP are both owned by the same company ....... and that company also owns Scotands People.


Brightsolid bought GR from ITV over a year ago, but it took months for the sale to be approved because it was putting all the UK's ancestry searching sites in the same basket.



The sale also meant that brightsolid also owns the social Friends Reunited (parent company of GR), and its associated dating, etc, sites.

Just to clarify the position on ScotlandsPeople. It's a Scottish Government site and Brightsolid currently have a three year contract for providing the technical input.
