Allotments in danger

As reported today in The Independent, the Con MP Eric Pickles is paving the way to enable the local councils to override the ruling of 1908 to provide allotments and so sell for development.

Apparently there are 300,000 allotments at risk. The only ones which will be safe are those registered under the Charities Act and they do not come under the jurisdiction of local authorities.

Whether you rent an allotment or not, if you feel strongly about this write to Mr Pickles. Quite easy just google his name and there you are.

We have a rising population of obesity who we are informed are a evergrowing charge on the NHS. We are told to exercise, eat healthily. What gives more exercise and organic fruit and veg than an allotment?

Yes I do feel strongly about this, so much open land has been lost to development over the years and only a few weeks ago our forests were at risk. We have held an allotment for over 30 years and are one of the lucky ones - ours are held under the Charities Act.

If our parish cvouncil allowed that to happen the 3rd world war would errupt in this village. We must remember, "localism", they said we would have more say in things like planning.

Kathlyn - the Parish Council would not have a lot to say, they could protest but it is your Town/City Councils need to be lobbied.

In our recent journeys, we have observed three new allotments in a twenty five mile radius. All sporting new huts. We have seen mainly the younger generation of gardeners beavering away.

One of my sons has had an allotment for four years. We are fortunate to have a large garden, and a good vegetable plot.
