I just laugh at them, tell them they are trying to run a scam and they put the phone down. Anyway, our Microsoft products are not quite kosher or registered. Blame a knowledgeable family member for that!

If only I was prepared, I'd put the phone to one side (still connected) and let their phone bill run up - lol

I got that phone call just a couple of hours ago

..................... sounded as though it was from India. Lady asked for husband by name. Then changed it to Mrs xxxxxx

then she said "Your Computer, you have a computer "

I cut her off sharply ...............

"No I don't"

and I hung up.

It's about the fourth call I've had over the last year!

These people are just chancers. They do not know you have a computer, its just guess work. Say that you don;t own a computer and put the phone down. Sorted.

I had somebody ring me from the justices department about some money I was owed.

I told him that, if he was working a scam he could,at least, get his facts right and telephone a country that had a justices department!

What would have happened?

They would have asked you to allow them to download some software to allow them to check your computer in more detail remotely.

They would then run a scan to "check for problems"

Whilst this was in progress they would, unknown to you, look for saved passwords, in the hope that they found one or more for your bank / credit accounts etc.

After the "Scan" had supposedly run they would inform you that your computer was seriously damaged and infected and offer to fix it for you.

You would then be asked to part with a sum of money, in exchange for fixing the problem. The card / account details you provide would then be accessed with a view to withdrawing any available funds.

Your PC, would most likely be left with trojans, viruses and other malware to allow them to raid it again in the future.

Details may vary, but this is typical of what might happen to you.....!

It's definitely a scan that has been around for a few years. It was on the telly a couple of years ago.

I had a telephone call today (from an unavailable number) from someone with an Indian accent. He said he was calling from somewhere - I can’t remember where - but mentioned Microsoft and said my computer was infected and he could help me get rid of the problem.

He asked me to press the Windows key & the R key then type in EVENTVWR then press enter. Obviously I didn’t but simply wrote down what he asked as I suspected by then this was a hoax call.

I wonder what would have happened it I had carried out his request!

Has anyone received a similar call?
