I have come across the term 'clicker' given as the occupation of several of my relatives in the early census returns - ie, 1841, 1851.

Does anyone know what this term means? I've tried Wikipaedia with no success.

Grateful for any ideas

It could be:

One who made eyelet holes in boots or uppers, using a machine that clicked.

A person in charge of the final stage of layout in printing in the print industry

A servant of a salesman who stood at the door to invite customers in.

:-)

One explanation said a clicker was a person working in the shoe trade and cutting out the uppers.
It seems a clicker is the name of the knife used for cutting heavy leather

A Clicker in the English shoe trade is a person who is skilled in the grain of leather and cuts or stamps out each part to make up the shoe ready for sewing, his skill makes the shoe look uniform.

Thanks everybody for your prompt replies. It makes sense now because others in the family where shoe or bootmakers.
