due to physical heath issues, when living in west ham, our first was born in forest gate hospital,(now newham)........and also our second, although at that time we lived in Peckham, south london

There were two St Mary's Hospitals in Paddington - one in Praed Street W2. which exists to this day - the other in the Harrow Road W9. The Harrow Road hospital was previously known as Paddington General Hospital until the late 60's. The register office for Paddington was in the Harrow Road in the City of Westminster.

Officially, births must be registered in the district where it took place within 42 days.

If you can't go to the district where your baby was born you can go to another office (still within 42 days) and the registrar will send your details to the appropriate district office.

Tis can be confusing and I can imagine that this can make things complex for our descendants.

I can only assume that I have found a match in my search - although the location does not equate to the hospital district!

Two of my children were registered in Willesden, London: I had to ask where this was as we were new to the area and didn't live there.

I did say to my husband, in years to come our descendants will be searching for our address and won't find it locally.

Our third was born in Kent and was actually registered in the town in which we lived. Much simpler!!!

Then there was my father who died on holiday on the south coast and whose death was registered in that area; a good couple of hundred miles from were he lived. No wonder we struggle trying to find our ancestors.

Its more where the birth was registered rather than the actual birth location. If the family dont live in the same reg area as the hospital then it would be that area rather than the hospital.
For instance I was born in the local Mother & Babies Hospital that came under Woolwich However my parents lived in Sidcup and thats the reg area for Sidcup my birth is.

This may sound like a silly question...I am trying to work out what district a hospital comes under?

For the hospital St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, London -what district would this be shown as on a Birth Certificate?

I am unable to find out and google is failing me today!

If anyone has the answer-this would be great help!
