My father was in Palestine 1946 - 1948. I have his army pay book, discharge papers and he sent for his army records just before he passed away. My brother has his medals and together with his photo created a display in a frame. As my son was in the army for nearly 15 years I decided to do a scrapbook of his career and overseas deployment. At the end of the book I have included details of my father's army life, my father-in-laws war effort in the National Fire Brigade and my great grandfather's army life in WW1 including a photo of his headstone in France (he was killed in action). I wanted my son and eventually my grandson to have a record of his family's military history. |

I'm planning to get my Dad's war papers, he was in France and Germany after D-Day, in the West Somerset Yeomanry (gunners). I don't know much, other than that he went missing at one point in France whilst despatch riding on a motorbike. I would also like to see his older brother's details - he was badly wounded in a tank in North Africa. Fleshing out the bones of ancestors, recent and ancient, is so interesting (and moving). |
