If i needed to have a DNA test...........the only way i would go about it, would be through my family practitioner who i know and absolutely trust. x

Perhaps ktssearching meant historical origins? Ancestry do that - we all came from Africa :D It's how we made our way across Europe that is different. I think that one of the Australian Gentlemen had his done last year. If he spots this, he may be able to give a bit of advice.

But I agree, for medical purposes then the GP. There are companies who advertise for DNA paternity/relationship purposes, although it seems to be easier with the male DNA than the female DNA

It makes a whole lot more sense to go back through the records first!

You might find when you get back to the mid-1800s that census records show your grx3 grandparent did come from Ireland.

That's what this site is for -- finding ancestors. Why not give the Find Ancestors board a try? Just one thread per question so I recommend starting there, and not continuing here. That is far more likely to get answers than any DNA test.

Family doctors don't do DNA tests, by the way. The "test" involves taking a swab from the inside of your cheek, like with a Q-tip, which you can do yourself, and then having the cells analyzed by a specialized lab. It can all be done anonymously, just for your own information. But then, to find any answers from it, it has to be compared with other people's results, to see what you share with whom. The real analysis, to see what families may be in your background, can only be done for male people, who are the only ones who carry the actual "family" genes down through the generations.

If you do post on Find Ancestors, make sure to give the information you have, as long as you have the permission of anyone who is living. Your grandparents would be the logical place to start working backwards.

And remember that on that board, people like to read plain English, not txtspk. ;)

This Australian bloke had maternal and paternal tests done last year.
Exciting stuff! My paternal DNA haplogroup is I - sub group Ultra Norse!

I have since made myself a horned helmet and taken up rape and pillage.

Mick ... that bit isn't actually funny. I'll delete if you will.
