We have just filled in the short form 2011 Canada Census, online

Took less than 10 minutes to answer 10 questions

Then up comes a page with Confirmation Number

AND

"Your household has been selected to fill out the National Household Survey"

in other words ....... the long form census

That took another almost 30 minutes!

so, did we win the long straw or the short straw???

I didn't think they were mailing out the survey! I got the long-form census last time and I think the time before; just lucky. ;)

For the foreigners, our long-form census is the detailed questions about personal background and household characteristics. It went to 1 in 10 households. The vile right-wing ideology-driven Conservative government abolished it last year, claiming it had had privacy complaints and that the head of Statistics Canada supported the decision. It could not produce a single complaint, and the head of Statistics Canada resigned because the government had lied about him; he didn't support the decision, he strongly opposed it.

So now it's a voluntary "survey", which is completely useless for planning by either public sector or private sector users.

I've heard that if you file the census return online you get the option of the long-form survey, so I'll have to check that out.

I want to make sure the sweling numbers of us godless atheists get counted properly! ;)

Janey

we filled the short form out on line

we had the option of that or phoning a special number and having the short form mailed out to us

OH discovered that even though it says Given Name (ie, implying only one name) .... he could put in all 3 of his

I heard that the long form (National Household Survey) was going to be mailed out in 3 weeks, to 1 in 3 households

BUT we were told immediately that we had been selected for it, and could either do it immediately, come back later, or refuse.

Not sure if there was a space for athiest :))

BOTH forms may well be of more help to family historians than it has seemed in other reports.
