My neighbour has a pond approx 6ft x 3-4ft and its very green and merky. He's bought a pump thingy and it started to clear nicely, but not anymore. He has to clean the filter roughly twice a day.....:o(((

Any suggestions to help him keep it clear.
He has fish and tadpoles in there and plants.

:-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

it will clear a lot when its been filterd, in june he could half empty pond and pour in saved rainwater that uisually clears ours, its caused from the daylight , he could use a net to get some of the gunge out and use it as fertilizer xx

hello jude how are u xxx

when it is warm i use a net to gather all the algae up.

There are inexpensive treatments you can buy that won't hurt either the fish or plants..it makes the algae clump together and sink so it is easier to get in the net and remove..

Hi,

We use a pack of barley straw, available from aquatic shops or garden centres that sell fish.

I dont know how it works , but it does.

Direct sunlight and aglae spores multiply like mad,,,,,plus if if water is too rich.....dont empty any water out as this will make it grow more..best is a UVA light filter it kiils the spores overtime as it filters though and the filter pads will need a clean at least 2/3 time a week for a good 2 weeks by then it should be clear water.
just a pump for a fountain is no good for getting rid of algea.

It is the algae it happens at this time of year - we have an UV filter which with the pump/charcoal filters keeps the water clear. Have heard the barleystraw helps.

You can, if memory serves me right get a pond cleaner which does not harm fish etc. Check at local pond centres

I have a pond that sounds about the same size , I used to have terrible algae problems every year until I invested in a UV light filter , they really work :-)
The Barley straw does work to a degree though .

Edit to say . Your supposed to change the bulb every few months but as my pond is so little I find that the bulb lasts at least two years !

Jude , your neighbour could try weighing it down with a few big stones . I believe it woks even if it is just floating about but obviously the pond will look nicer if one can't see the straw bag :D

We had the first proper rain in weeks the other day , it bought down a mass of dryed moss of the roof that blocked the drain , this in turn caused the drain to overflow and my pond copped the bath water !! The fish must have wondered what on earth was going on ......lol.....it's taken a few days but is almost back to clear water again .

I hope the straw trick works for your neighbour .
