you will be looking at something like this,

Jun 1882 (>99%)

Fishlock William Edward Fulham 1a 470
Spooker Abraham Fulham 1a 470
SPOONER Abraham Fulham 1a 470
Whetman Ann Sarah Fulham 1a 470
Woolfrey Ann Fulham 1a 470

in this case Fishlock married Whetman, the others are in the same page of the register.

so when ordering you need to be sure you have the right pairing... it is 'usually' possible to work this out from the census following the marriage.

If you are only certain of one person in a marriage then it is best to order the certificate using just that one name and then the certificate will tell you who they married. Sometimes not all the people on the page of marriages have been transcribed so you may get two names out of 4 or three names out of 4 but the person you are looking for may be married to the one who is not transcribed yet.

What you see listed as the same page and number in the index are infact collected records from anywhere within that particular registration district within that quarter.
They may have married in the same place, but maybe miles apart but still within the same district. At the end of a quarter all the records from EACH venue are copied and sent to the GRO where a master copy is compiled out of a mix of the records from a particular area.
I never order certificates in 2 names, just one is sufficient, having checked on freebmd and later census to hopefully find a correct match.....not so easy with common names of course.

If you'd like to outline who you are searching for, people will try to guide you here.

EDIT
You must always order using the exact name shown on the index, even if you know that it is not spelt correctly...eg. Lilly instead of Lily

When you get marriage search results, you will see this:

Found one partner in a marriage but now looking for the spouse?

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/marriage-help.html

Reading that should give you a complete explanation.
