Son wants to make a stew/casserole...... as he is unable to get stock cubes, ie. oxo out there , what do you ladies use for your gravy please.

Knorr stock cubes are available, gravy mixes and canned gravy aren't bad, Americans are not big gravy consumers, I have my oxo's mailed to me also english gravy in the packets :-)

thank you dame...... I was told that we could not bring oxo or the like into the usa because of the mad cow disease we had over here a while back...... will try posting them then.... :-)

Wall-mart sells Beef Stew casserole mix in packets.......lovely & another make KROGER Stew packets from any Dollar Shop.

Heres a selection here from the Wallmart in Orlando, although I would imagine not all of the gravies are as we in the uk would consider as gravy ;-)

I think Oxo's disgusting (know it from childhood and it's sold here) -- the salt!!!

I use a can of beef bouillon (regular Campbell's soup, or in Canada we have store brands) to add to stews. Not beef stock, which is also too salty and kind of weird tasting. Then I thicken it just like natural stock or juices.

But if you want ready-made gravy, there are loads of cans of that available, and also packaged mixes. You have to have a high tolerance for salt there too. ;) And watch out for regional differences; gravy may tend to be a little barbecue-saucy.

If your son prefers not to shop at Walmart, as many of us do, any grocery store should carry stuff like that.

I always use Oxtail Soup in my casseroles. My mum used to this as well. If not a Beef bourginon or something like that is quite nice.
