Thank you all for your interest, with over 4000 in my tree think i'll be giving this a miss, just checked it out on FTM got to 400 pages still not my full tree, think it will have to be direct line only, see what that comes up with.

I've done it a few times and never ever ever ever again!

Pages and pages and pages of A4, gallons of ink, headache doing the jigsaw puzzle of assembling the thing (cos it never printed in the right order), sticky tape everywhere, living room looking like a bombsite

Oh and then you show it to family who claim to be interested, who freak out at the mass expanse it takes up in their house!

Have you thought about using www.genealogyprinters.com? You send them the gedcom file of your tree and they print it for you on paper up to four foot wide, they then post it to you rolled up in a tube! Ron the boss is a very nice guy too!

I just had a look at my tree and you need to be in full tree, ancestors or decendants view, then you will get the option on the left to print showing a scale.
Click 'print' and it takes you to print preview page. If it thinks your tree is too big - (I dont know what the limit is,) it will tell you there isnt a preview, just that it will take a lot of pages.

I tried the print preview in ancestors view and then on the right if you hover your mouse over the screen it shows an outline of an A4 rectangle and you can count how many sheets you need.
By moving the sliding scaler you can resize the names boxes within the A4 sheets. But be careful , cos if you make the name boxes too small in order to save paper you may not be able to read the names.

I printed off just ancestors and counted the sheets (6 sheets for 119 names) then set the whole tree at the same scale, I then could calculate how many sheets I would need . ie. 915 relations should need about 47 sheets.

Yes RB, that's what mine told me just now. And the computer didn't say how many pages it would be, just 'All'.

Not risking it - lol

That's interesting to know Kemp - Thanks, I'll have to experiment, at least as far as the 'print preview' stage out of curiosity.

How long is a piece of string?

I've only printed mine off once when it was in it's infancy. Admittedly several generations (possibly 3) had numerous children approaching double figures, but it took 10-20 sheets and the lounge floor to stick it together. There were a number of blank pages to 'square things off'.

Never again!

Anyone know how you find out how many pages A4 size your tree needs to print it complete.
