Good morning all.

Does anybody out there know if I were to cancel my GR subscription, would there be any way of retrieving the information I have stored on the site or would it be the old fashioned 'by hand' way?

Many thanks.

Go to "my account" top right, you'll be asked to enter your p/word again, then go to left side and "delete account" is there!!

I can only suggest copying and pasting your info onto a disc...there is also gedcom which l don't understand!!

Hope this helps?

Thanks Jude. I don't really understand the gedcom thing, but having said that, I haven't looked into it either, so maybe that's why?!

On an incidental note...I notice your research details and although it's a million to one chance, I have a friend in Portsmouth whose surname is Pettitt, (I notice yours is Pettit, one 't'). Is that your region of the country you're searching? No worries if not! Just thought I'd mention it :-)

If you have a family tree programme such as Family Tree Maker. Go into the gedcom and you should be able to export it to your programme.

Talanya....as far as l know its with one "t", George Pettit was my mothers brother...and George was also my grandfathers name, l think he came from the London area.
George my uncle became leader of his troops when the main leader was killed on the beaches of Dunkirk.....he became a Major or something, aged 18yrs old (the yougest) ....so the story goes anyways. Bit usesless are'nt l...lol

As Marion says don't delete anything till you have it backed up!!

Thank you all.

I was contemplating ending the subscription due to 'financial constraints', but after such a long time and hard work by all of the GR community I'm finding it really hard to actually do it! Although the new design I find very confusing and unappealing!

I need to read up on the gedcom thingy or get a programme such as FTM maybe.

Thanks again.

I think you will need to retrieve ALL your info,

BEFORE you delete yourself!

If you do 'delete' yourself all your info,Tree, posts, replies, all goes into cyberspace

If you choose not to renew your subscription then you revert to being a Free Member. There is no need to delete yourself at all.

You retain exactly the same privileges that you have now with the exception that

1) you will not be able to send personal messages to other members, although you can reply to ones sent to you
2) you will not be able view other members trees
3) you will not be able to post on the message boards.

Your own tree remains intact, and will continue to be able to access it and add to it as before.

Hi Talanya

When I left GR my whole tree was lost ... now have FTM. Before you leave do make sure you save it, GR told me they couldn't give it back to me, was absolutely distraught at the time.
