The Rainbow Bridge

My beloved 17 year old kitty, Gizmo, was diagnosed with cancer last weekend - an intestinal tumour with suspected secondary lung cancer. I have been at home with her since the diagnosis giving her all the tlc, treats and cuddles any kitty could possibly ever want.

A dear friend reminded me of the Rainbow Bridge and I wanted to share the poem and website with anyone who, like me, needs that like something extra to get them through tough times x

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

I have read Rainbow Bridge many times & although it is very sad the sentiment behind it is quite uplifting.
I feel so sorry for you - I've been there a few times with sick kitties. You know you can't do any more for them, just try to make their lives more comfortable & give them all they want. I hope your little Gizmo doesn't suffer, she will sense that you are trying to help her.
My thoughts are with you. x

Poor Gizmo, and poor you knowing you have to let her go soon.

I have been through this with my cats, and my dog, and it's heartbreaking to have to say goodbye to a loving pet but Rainbow Bridge is helpful and offers nice thoughts of meeting with our lovely pets again one day.

Hope things go gently for Gizmo

Hey now, you know the saying, Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet, lots of us the same here and sometimes we even get to meet up face to face!

Thanks guys - your kind words mean so much. Gizmo is still battling onwards - despite the 12-48 hour expectancy predicted on Sunday. Stubborn to the very end .... just like her owner ;-)

Had to let our dog go May 20th. We are still gutted. Can I advise you to take some photos. We took some on the days running up to our vet date. Looking back we know we had to let him go and the photos help remind us we did the right thing for our Coco. So sorry your poor puss is poorly xx

I had 3 cats, all related (brother, sister and a kitten of the sister) all had to be put to sleep through stomach tumours, between the ages of 12 and 15.
It's very sad, but they had good lives.
My thoughts are with you and Gizmo.

Gizmo will leave when she is ready, she is giving you the chance to have a few more loving cuddles together first. As long as she isn't in pain, it's nice to have a little more time together.

It will be a hard time for you all but better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all - means the same whether human or pet.
