I love it! It has a special meaning for me as, many years ago when I was about 10, my Dad took me to one of the full rehearsals for the Troop. It was a magical day that I will never forget.

Lovely to watch, and it makes me wonder how many of these lads will make it back from their next tour of duty.

Such a proud time for them and their families, and I wish them all well.

I watched it also, never miss it and the young men have been known to complain about the weight and heat of a bearskin there is Prince Philip 90yrs young wearing his with pride.

I love it although I was out this morning and didn't see it, I shall watch the highlights this evening. I love pageantry and to see the military marching. When I worked at RAF Henlow many, many years ago, before there were so many cut backs in cash and men, we used to be able to go and watch the Commander in Chief's inspection/parade. It was lovely to see all these very smart young men (some were young Apprentice Technicians only just out of training) parading round the Square to the band. The smartest squadron was always the RAF Queens Colour Squadron.

One year the RAF band was unable to make it so they had an army band instead, they 'teased' the troops by playing Those magnificent men in their flying machines, instead of the usual marches. It was quite funny.

I was sad when RAF bases no longer held these parades. I was also sad when they stopped doing the Royal Tournament.

Ann - I miss the Royal Tournament too - especially the cannon race! Anyone know why it ceased? Think it raised money for SAAFA or something similar.

PricklyHolly Report 11 Jun 2011 15:11

I thought the Royal Family looked the happiest i have ever seen them all together on the balcony.
The Queen really looked as if she was enjoying herself the whole way through.
Bless....x

LOVE IT so can't believe I missed it earlier! Will have to catch the highlights later.

Ann and Chris - I remember my Dad took me to see that last ever Royal Tournament back in... 1999 was it?? One of the guards let me try on his bearskin!

Uggers

Uggers Report 11 Jun 2011 15:42

Neither. I saw the rehearsal last weekend by mistake and it's great to see but I've never watched it on television and I wouldn't go to see it especially

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 11 Jun 2011 15:42

I think the reason the R Tournament finished was the lack of manpower in the sevices.

Matthew yes that would be about right.

I did read somewhere that the GunRun was being reproduced somwhere but can't remember where.

Having a husband in the Fleet Air Arm we always supported them in the gun run. :-) :-) :-)

Just caught it on the news. Will watch the highlights later. Liked that William appeared relaxed and warm towards Kate - talking to her and putting his arm round her albeit briefly.

We watched the flypast on the "Red Button" channel

The BBMF are based up our way so we hoped that we might see them on their way back, but they flew over north of us today, however Rutland and Stamford would have seen them in full glory.....!.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 11 Jun 2011 21:34

Watched it this evening. My favourite part is the flypast especially the red white and blue of the Red arrows. Did anyone see the queen say to Edward's little girl "Red white and blue."?

GEORGINA Report 11 Jun 2011 23:37

I love this parade and it always brings a lump to my throat, ever since I actually went there.

Years ago, back in the dark ages of 1962, I actually had a ticket in the seats, because my fiance was in the 2nd battalion Scots Guards. They spent weeks learning routines and getting their gear ready. Talk about women spending hours doing their hair, those bearskins took hours to get right. Oh those glorious days. wonder where he is now?

Mind you, standing right next to a piper playing Auld Land Syne was not treat. My ears took ages to recover!
