Thoughts and prayers go out to the people of New Zealand and in particular the residents of Christchurch.
What a year they've had and experiencing these frequent quakes it is a constant reminder of the devastating power of the unstable earth.

Keep safe everyone.

6 people have been reported injured.

The historic timeball building which suffered damage in one of the earlier quakes has now collapsed.

More liquefaction.

I have just read this on BBC News on my computer, my prayers and thoughts are with all who live in New Zealand, what a dreadful year they are experiencing. I wish that there was a way I could help.
Many many years ago I had penpals in North Island and wonder if any of their families have been in or close to these areas, sadly I can only recall that one was called David, his older brother was a fireman and I think they lived in Rotarua.

NEW Zealand's earthquake-devastated city Christchurch was hit by another powerful aftershock today, with reports of people trapped in a collapsed building.
The shock briefly cut power, caused liquefaction and terrified residents.

"We are still assessing the situation following both aftershocks between 1.30 and 2.30pm today," the statement said.

People were feared trapped as a building fell near the central city, news website stuff.co.nz reported, citing details from police.

Police said St John's Church in central Christchurch had collapsed, trapping two people, who had been rescued.

New Zealand authorities, who recorded the quake as a magnitude 5.5, said it struck at 1pm local time, and was centered about 10km east of the city at a depth of 11km - its proximity and shallowness giving it strong motion, which led residents to compare it with the February 22 tremor which killed 182 people.

The US Geological Survey recorded today's earthquake as a magnitude 5.2. The earthquake was followed less than 10 minutes later by a tremor above a magnitude 4.0.
