Trade directories give a description of what is farmed in a particular area

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Although it may not tell you what your relatives farmed.

historical directories on line (google it)

Also try the local family history society. They may have booklets/old photos etc. or have members who may have done specific research. Google the name of the farm to see if it still exists, have a look at it on Google Earth (I'm always doing this, lol!)

If you can find them in census, look at the images. Sometimes there may be 'servants' living with the family, described as cow keeper, or shepherd etc etc

Failing that, look for historical items on the internet, which might describe the farming in the area. Or the local/main library in the area who may be able to suggest an appropriate book(let) to purchase?

I'd suggest that most farms or rural families would keep a few chickens for domestic consumption etc.

I have found several families in the 1800's that are Farmers.
Where can i find out what they farmed IE Cows for Beef or Dairy, Sheep or poultry. any info would be very helpful.
