I think it's possible that genetically you have a pre-disposition to certain family traits, in this instance perhaps to inheriting an 'addictive' personality ..that might show itself in being addicted to the 'wrong things' like alchohol and drugs or gambling...or just cups of coffee ( in my case lol). |

Lol Rose. I don't think that coffee has been known to destroy a family ... mine would have been blown to smitherines long ago :-D |

I was going to say the same thing, emotional and personality traits in my opinion are more likely to be inherited traits, while the ability to deal with those are nurtured into us, or not as the case may be. |

if it were all 'nurture' then we wouldn't need any of these genes at all :-) |

Then again my relative always trots out that the family were "prone to alchoholism, TB, moving house a lot...and dying young" |

my family has been prone to gambing ..... at least my grandfather that I knew ... it was very amazing when I 'met' some distant cousins through Genes ( that is all I knew about here at first, searching trees ) one in another part of England and one in America ( not a close family ! ) and found that their grandparents were just the same ... gamblers ... in both the female and male lines of the family ! ... and also drinkers, like my grandfather ... |

Nature vs nurture seems to omit the individual personality - and their personal view of their upbringing. |

I suppose as addictive behaviour was in his/her genes what ever happened at the age of 40 meant he or she turned to alcohol as a prop and so nurture did not come to the fore. But then you have the environmental issue of alcohol being so cheap and easy to buy. |

I saw a programe a couple of weeks ago where a family believed it had a gene which made them prone to put on weight. |

But Hayley, were talking about addiction, not taking the occasional drink in a controlled and sensible manner. |

Libby, I think some of us aren't as well equipped to deal with life and situations as others, regardless of our upbringing or genetics. |
