Sudden Deafness. Update !

Dolly Report 20 Jun 2011 03:07

I woke yesterday morning to sudden deafness in my right ear. I have slight hearing loss in my left ear and constant tinnitus for which I wear a hearing aid.
My right ear however was ok at my last hearing test, but yesterday I woke up with my hearing severely less in my right ear, so much so that if I cover my left ear I cannot hear the TV although I can hear talking but not clear, I can't hear people across the room adressing me, and I have constant loud tinnitus in that ear now which I didn't have before.
Has anyone else suffered this problem?
I am going to ring my GP first thing this morning to see if she knows whats wrong.
Its driving me mad and making tearful, not only the costant loud whistling in my right ear but the lack of hearing is quite devastating. :-S :-0

I've been to the doctors, she looked in both my ears, both are clean so not blocked with wax. She tested my hearing with a tuning fork and was interested that I could hear it louder in front of my ear than behind it. I don't know what that means?
I have some nasal drops to use for a week while I'm away, then if nothing has improved she will refer me to ENT specialist, she thinks the latter is what will happen.

I hope, if you need it, that the referral comes through quickly. If you have a hearing aid, is it a NHS one? If so could you not have made an appointment at the hearing clinic at the hospital where you got the aid? I have two aids and am having some trouble with one of them so will make an appointment (used to be able to just turn up).

Dolly.

Dont worry too much.....looks like you do have normal hearing if you can hear in front of the ear it means the vibrations through the Rinne fork is heard.
the back of the ear test is through the bone conductive hearing,,,,,,,,that's the only hearing what I have in one ear.

Must be something simple may well come back soon ......

You did the right thing in going to the doctors though all sudden deafness should be seen too.

Having had 13 ear ops I have known & had many hearing tests.

Thank you Ann and Marilyn,

Ann I already have a hearing aid and it is an NHS one, I've had it about 18 months. I never knew you could just turn up at a clinic, I shall have to ring and see if I can get hold of my audiologist, she works part time at my local hospital. I need some new batteries and tubes so I can talk to her then about my ear.

Marilyn I hope you're right about my hearing returning, although I do worry because my mum has 2 hearing aids and is totally deaf without them but has difficulty hearing with the aids in, even though these are relatively new to her, she had the new moulds made at the beginning of the year, and has been back to the clinic on numerous occasions, her audiologist said they can do no more for her.

I forgot to say my GP did say she thought I might have trouble with the nerve in my ear that sends signals to the brain, so whether thats repairable I don't know. :-S

I would always make an appointment with the hearing clinic at hospital rather than go tomy GP with my hearing problems as theya re the specialists in the field. Most of ours (not all) are very helpful. They had to go over to an appointment system because the clinic is so well used.

Dolly .

I have a Bone Anchor hearing aid at the back of my ear , reason being my nerve went dead in one ear .......as following all hearing tests and I 've have loads, so only know that I could NOT hear that Rinne fork in front of my ear, only through the bone at the back of the ear ( conductive hearing) through the bone !!

I have a screw at the back of my ear through the bone to hear of which a little tiny box is fixed( Hearing Aid )
So as you said you could hear in front with the Rinne fork test looks like your nerve is still intact !!
But as I said it MAY well come back ....only ENT cane tell you this.

But there are loads of help out there, and yes you can go to any Audiologist for them to check your hearing aid without an appointment unless its half day like mine on a Wednesday , ring them first !!

Good luck .

Marilyn ...
