We've not decorated for donkey's years but we always used to put up wallpaper starting nearest to the windows and work away from where the light comes into the room, so in a hall it would probably be from downstairs and work upwards.

I bet a decorator would tell you something completely different!!

EDIT - just looked at the link above and as suspected we were wrong!!

Joy, you have to start at the longest drop first, and then work to a corner .
then you can go to the other side of the paper and go the oppiste way

Joy think it may be to late but i would say put paper up that you can next time just paint. so that way you want have no more sriping and hanging on the stairs witch is a big problen as we get older and the hight become to much
and then you can just freshen up the paint

also dont for get the wood on the stairs you no the wood at the side any way
when papering dont forget it is a slop and will have to make share you cut the paper from the longest point or when comeing to hang the paper you will find you have cut it to shult

i do all the decor in this house so are fermiller with probles that you may come across

Thank you shelly

i havent picked my wall paper yet
ive ben to every shop in Teesside but cant decide
i wanted blue but may have to go grey or silver or black
so maybe one i can paint next time is the way to go

the hardest part is shifting
the junk/treasured possesions about
and OMG the book off the landing shelves
millions of them

Oooo - that long drop and the angled/sloped bottom edge! That brings back memories. I was responsible for measuring the dry paper/cutting and pasting. Except I'd dry cut it at the shortest edge - OH balancing on a ladder holding the top of the pasted paper against the wall was not a happy bunny :-0

Much prefer lining paper and paint - problem solved :-)

Having done this myself years ago, I can tell you - you're going to need a swear box lol! When you're putting up that longest drop, you really need someone at the bottom to gently ease it into place, whilst you hold the top (plus more probably.)

Good luck!

AWW Wend
no point in a swear box in this house
it would be full just me stripping it

better order a skip to collect the pennies pmsl

If you are decorating all the rest of the house yourself, you brave, clever, foolhardy person you, you could be make it your reward to have some other poor soul do the stairs.

Hi..

Im a decorator..Always start at the longest drop first but remember to work out how many drops either side....you dont want to end up hanging your first drop to find out that when you get to the end of the wall that you have an inch left towards the wall... 53cm is the average width of a roll of paper... make sure you work out how many drops you will need and order an extra roll incase, if you get a pattern (i.e flowers etc) you will only get 3 drops to a roll.. this will be longer on a stairwell so less drops to a roll... Hope this helps..

This also depends on where you longest drop is of course, mine is in the middle, but remember you have the landing and hallway to take into account...my first drop would be at an end though, so best to start a new roll if you have hung a couple of drops already before you get to the longest drop......good luck

Its ok to paste 3-4 at a time if you know what your doing ( in that i mean if you can hang 3-4 drops in 20 mins), you may be able too so in that case give it a go, but if you like paper hanging but only had a few attempts, i would recommend you paste one at a time, the longer you leave the paste on, especially if you go for a pattern the more the paper will stretch and then the patterns wont match....

Also want to clarify my 2nd from last post, i didnt mean start in the corner as in to the edge, i meant from an earlier post, dont start in the middle of a room, you dont want to end up with an inch from the end by starting in the middle of a room as trying to get an inch paper on the wall will be a nightmare, although you could splice it, but then again i wouldnt recommend that either if your not a trades person 12 Cms in os the rule as we are in metric now.... Rule of thumb get the first drop straight and all the other drops will fall into place, get the first dropped pie eyed, and your knackered lol
