Island,
Have you asked your mouse to right click instead of left click (or the opposite of what you usually do?) Ctrlpanel, mouse, change click.

Mine will usually behave itself afterwards. We all need a bit of variety.

Ta Bob,
I checked my system maintenance and it said it was OK. it appears to have an automatic defrag on it.

if it aint broke, don't mend it i think. I can make enough problems as it is from pure ignorance.

carol :-)

I had an issue with updates not wanting to down load, i was assisted by microsoft to download a fix, if you think its a internet problem then thats what I would do............goto the microsoft website and search for a fix for your problem,

Bob

Georgina, I dont think its a good Idea to work the comp while defragging....best idea I think is to setup a defrag, at night......goto bed and leave it to it.....

Thanks Island, I remember doing that on my very old computer, the 386, and it is a bit hypnotic and very time consuming. . I'll check to see if it automatic. Don't really know what my little pooter man set up for me here, thanks for the idea.

Hi Mayfield

I ended up logging off then selecting 'download updates and restart'. It did that but when I booted up again they had failed to configure. It isn't so much not getting the updates that concerns me but more the reason why - something is stopping them methinks :-D Thank you anyway.

Hi Georgina

You're most welcome to butt in - maybe GR should give us a pc help board? -
Our defrag is scheduled for 8pm every Monday so it goes on in the background while we do what ever we want on or offline.
With our previous desktop pc we used to 'leave it to cook' - it was quite mesmerising to watch on max - better than the tele sometimes LOL

Sorry to butt in, but can I defrag my PC while I'm browsing GR and playing music or will I have to wait until I am finished?
I haven't done a defrag for a long time and can't remember.

Hi Island,
If you are looking for how to launch Microsoft updates in Vista.
Go to Start, it may be in the list thats displayed then, if not click all programs and scroll to find it.

Good luck,
Mayfield

I wondered if it might be the mouse Teresa but that wouldn't eplain the issues with temp files and microsoft updates not loading.

I've tried using the touchpad (hard work!) but that doesn't behave any better than the mouse.

Thank you :-D

Sounds like your mouse might be worn? Try changing the mouse before doing anything else, they are cheap enough to buy.

You should always do a disk cleanup before defragging, as this also clears disk space, allowing for a cleaner defrag. (not doing so means you're also defragging unwanted files, the bin, temp files and cookies).

Reporting back....

Last defrag was 20/6/11 next is 27th so that is ok.

I was able to delete temp net files through disc clean so thank you very much for that suggestion Kay :-D

Mouse is making contact online with first click but still need several goes with offline icons. I tried to do a mouse check but when I was testing the speed it froze! Tried a game of spider and it is still temperemental.

I don't know how I can find microsoft updates so guess I wait for it to offer?

Ann, thank you for your suggestion. I'll ask fella if we have those programmes (it's his pc even though I use it the most ;-) )

Have you loaded CCleaner onto your PC? It is efficient at getting rid of temp internet files. Another free programme is Advanced System Care. That works well too. I run both on mine.

Thank you ladies,

Defrag is automatic and we started one manually not so long ago but I will check whether it is still programmed.

I'll have a look at disc clean as well.

Keep them coming if anyone has other ideas - all are most welcome :-D

Kay????

Kay???? Report 22 Jun 2011 11:46

Have you done a defrag,,,and then a disc clean up....

close down any open sites or programes........

go to programes,,,,,,,,Accessories,,,,,,down to Defrag,,,when it pops up click Activate,,,,,,let it run its course ........then so a disc clean up by the same method........this should be done weekly or on a regular basis........

Island Report 22 Jun 2011 11:36

1) PC is slow and icons often need several clicks to react as (if I've worn a hole and have to try another spot!)

2) Updates are failing to configure - automatically and manually.

3) I can delete cookies but not temp internet files of which there are about 600!

4) Antivirus usually scans automatically daily but yesterday I ended up starting it manually - it hasn't scanned yet today either. Antivirus is up to date and we "are protected"

We have Vista and IE8

I would appreciate any advise please :-D

I'll hang about for half an hour but after that will look in when I can today.
Thanks in anticipation :-D
