There are many charities (or use to be) that would be grateful of household items that are in got nick, if you rang them up they would usually collect.

Yes look out for adverts that need items that may be saleable. One of my local appeals was the 'stairway to heaven' to build a memorial for the people that died in the Bethnal Green disaster during the war trying to escape from the underground in the panic from what they perceived as an air attack .

Put it on Freecycle - someone may be glad of it or offer it to one of the charity shops, they will collect.

MayBlossomEmpressofSpring Report 24 Jun 2011 22:24

Just checked, our council have started from April this year charging £23 for bulk items, OAP are not exempt from charges. We have two or three scrap iron lorries come round at least once a week, good luck to them trying to make an honest living without fleecing anyone.

Yes Germany do operate a giveaway day,,,,,,also they have places where things can be took and people just take what they wish,
Uk councils couldnt do anything so simple to lessen landfill.....they are run by men aint they...... :-D :-D

Big Report 24 Jun 2011 21:46

In Germany and some other countries I understand that people are invited to put their goods on the street one named day of the month, during that day the goods maybe picked up by whoever may need a working thing or as scrap. Maybe a similar system would work in your local council

my council in anglesey will take away 6 large items per yr for free.fridges, freezers, beds, old lawnmowers(with the fuel removed first of course)but then we do pay horrendous council tax ,so i imagine that if they charged for these services all hell would be let loose.x :-D

It's ridiculous, isn't it?
If ou want our council to take away an old bed, they treat it as 3 items:
bed base
mattress
headboard

You could buy a new bed for the cost of taking away the old one.
Yet again, we truly 'green' people who don't drive cars pay through the nose.

The cost of a bus from here to the bottom end of town (about a mile) is £1.10 - and the last bus leaves town at 6:50pm - not very useful if you want to go out is it? ....and they wonder why so many people feel they HAVE to have a car!!!

FRANK06

FRANK06 Report 24 Jun 2011 20:34

My mother-in-law has been having a clear out and decided that she could gain a little more space in her home by getting rid of an old rocking chair. As an OAP and a law abiding citizen, she called her local SNP council who are very proud of their green credentials, to arrange collection of these items as she has done previously.
That call out for an old rabbit hutch was charged at £12.50 but this has now gone up to £25.00 as the standard cost of uplifting "larger items"

Now we know who is paying for this green future.

My wife of course went mad and told her to leave it until we can visit when the "large item rocking chair" will become a bunch of sticks and burned on the bonfire in the garden.

I know, more global warming, but then we don't have a car to visit the dump and it's not available to pedestrians.

...........and why should an 80 year old have to pay £40.00 in three months to remove some household items which she does not want to leave out on the street ........... :-S :-S

There we were worrying about the quick buck cowboys when the problem lies closer to home. :-D
