FOUND OUT THAT YEARS AGO GIRLS AND BOYS WOULD WALK SET ROUTE AND THIS WAS CALLED THE MONKEY RUN

WONDERED IF IT WAS JUST LOCAL

AS I WORK AS A CARER THEY TELL ME ABOUT YEARS GONE BY SOME HAVE SAID OH YES WE MET THAT WAY JOHN

Mostly at dances, but would sometimes be chatted up in the street and if they looked OK we would stop and flirt with them, was never a lad on his own, always a group. Most of local boys wre scared stiff of my Mum, so they never volunteered!

Looking at the census' I see quite a few people married someone in their local area, even from the same street. My parents grew up in the same street.
So meeting ones spouse at the corner of the road is nothing new.

You must hear some fascinating stories farmer as our most senior generation tend towards short term memory loss but have an amazing recall of their much younger days.

My Grandad told me that in his day nobody left the village, it was the thing to find a village girl, and that when he wanted to get married there were only two available, Nan or Hilda, he said he could,nt stand Hilda giggling all the time so he chose Nan, they lived in the same house all their married life, and Hilda and her husband Jim lived next door.
Anyone would have been lucky to have married Grandad <3

I met my husband at church which is where a lot of my friends met theirs. To be correct at the after church youth fellowship on a summer evening walk. He was in the RN and all the RN lads who had any attachment to any church used to come to our Baptist church which had a large youth fellowship.

My mother bucked the trend lol

She was a Landgirl in a village about 15 miles from her city of birth, Norwich, and one day was cycling back from work to her digs in the village when my Dad whistled at her. He was 35 and on demob after the army, it was October 1945 and his home village was just outside Buckingham in Bucks. Mother, being a brazen hussy and 30 yrs old, stopped and spoke to him. The rest is history, as they say. They married just after Christmas 1945

I think at one time Prince of Wales Road was the Monkey Run in Norwich but the good old Samson and Hercules Dancehall was the place many people met their future spouses.

My parents were both born in the UK. Dad in Manchester, Mum in London. Dad emigrated to NZ in 1956. Mum left the UK on her O.E in 1956 (accompanied by a teddy bear given to her by my Grandfather, as young ladies' did not travel alone). Mum lived and worked in Brisbane for nine months before travelling on to NZ.

Mum and Dad met while working at the same Hotel in the South Island.

Today is their 53rd wedding anniversary !!

My Grandmother was one of eight girls and lived in rural Ireland. Although she was in love with a carpenter ...good trade but no land!...she was married off to a local farmer much older than she was. She led him a merry dance,though, and he was bankrupt in no time.... :-D

Its a type of name nearly every town had at a certain era, there used to be one in Wolverhamton.Around St. Peters Church and the old market place,close to quite a few pubs,at the bottom of the Church Steps Arther Colbourne used to play his Accordian and preach asking everyone to join in his hymn singing.used to be good fun . Nowadays it seems all they want to do is get legless and throw up. Shame .**M** :-D
