I too remember the friendship cake PH
It was a big deal in the eighties,we added fruit. Tasted nice :-).

Also recall Mam having a ginger beer plant sitting on the kitchen window sill and she made lovely ginger beer.........lashings of the stuff ;-) :-D

It was given to me by a friend and so i feel obliged to go through with it.
I just can't help wondering how many people had it before she did and did they wash their hands!! lol :-S

Lol... I dare say they were different 'brews.

We made them in Germany too, when I lived there early 80s and I'm not sure that Customs would have been too keen on letting the same 'mix' into UK.

I just had a look at mine under the tea towel. If it stops bubbling, it means you have killed it.

There were alot of shared-mixture German friendship cakes around here in 1980s, but I haven't heard of one in recent years.

The cooked cake was actually quite nice.

I remember doing Ginger beer and passing on the 'plant' and I think I might also have had a cake mix to pass on or my Mum might have done.

I have just received a "Herman The German Friendship Cake"
Well, when i say cake, it's actually a bowl of gloop that i have to keep alive for the next ten days!!

Has anyone else ever received one? I had never heard of it before. :-S
