HISTORY OF A HOUSE 1881/1891 CENSUS!

I'm sure I searched for my house over the century by address. The problem came prior to 1891 when it was given just a number on a street, rather than it's name. As we live in a very rural area, in the end I traced it by the description of the land and the house owner, for example "farmer of 47 acres". So now I know (part of) my house was built between 1861 and 1871. There have been a couple of extensions.

Edit, When we bought the house in 1997 we asked the building society for, and paid about £15 for, copies off all the deeds. They went all the way back to.....1952. Then I did a separate search with some company or other and got exactly the same results. I do have some photos from 1964 and some great pics from 1925 which the nephew of a previous owner sent to us. So all in all I am quite happy.

I would do some research at the library first.

I did a lot of research for a GR member about the local High St.

On 1901 census there were numbers 53 and 54 which appeared to be at the end and on opposite sides of the road.

Well they were knocked down in 1902. The High Street has been renumbered a couple of times since then so number 53 is nowhere near the position in 1901

The Land Registry listing as Gwynne said would be interesting reading. But you'd have to take into consideration that it may have been owned by a landlord at some point. It doesn't cost much - certainly under £4.

If you don't have access to FMP as suggested by Amokavid, why not put up a thread on 'Finding Ancestors'? You don't need to say that it is your own house, just that you are interested to know the historical occupants.

If you have access to the 1911 census you could do a place search then work backwards from there by using same people. An outside chance but you never know.

PS

However, the land registry will have details of everyone who has owned it since it was built but that has to be paid for.

The only place you'll find them free is in a library or record office.

Or maybe try asking at the local studies department of your town's library.

Only the 1881 census is free online and house numbers may have changed since then, so you can't be sure.
