It's probably the letter 'e' - try comparing the letter with one in another word in which you would expect to find the 'e' in.

Bad writing has a lot to answer for - still trying to work out if one of mine is a Street Hawker, or a Street Walker :-S

The hansom cab is a kind of horse cart designed and patented in 1834 by Joseph Hansom, an architect from York. The vehicle was developed and tested by Hansom in Hinckley, Leicestershire, England. Originally called the Hansom safety cab, it was designed to combine speed with safety, with a low centre of gravity for safe cornering. Hansom's original design was heavily altered by John Chapman to improve its practicability, but retained Hansom's name.

Perhaps he felt one had more standing than the other? Or there wasn't enough room to fit both on the form!

Did you mean Proprietor, or is that how it was spelt? It could have been a Hansom Cab. Who knows? May be he used a Cab to deliver mail ;-)

1881 - Retired Cab Proprictor
1885 - Retired Postmaster
1886 - Retired Car Proprictor
1886 - Retired Cab Proprictor (2 months later)
1891 - Retired Postmaster

1st - George can't remember want he has retired from,
2nd - "the first motor cars manufactured in the United Kingdom, was produced in East Peckham, Kent between 1896 and 1898."

so he couldn't of been a car propriotor in 1851!
