Licences are required for each dog in N. Ireland. Cost £5. However as from next year a dog licence will not be issued to an owner unless the owner can supply evidence of mircro chipping.

Why not here I do not know.

Dogs in the UK used to have to have a licence and collar with their owners details on. Don't know when that stopped. Perhaps it was too much hassle for the powers to be to check up on them?

I think there has been talk of reintroducing it here but the cost discussed was quite a bit higher than a fiver.
Problem is enforcing it.?

it is still the law for dogs to have a collar with certain details on.
They got rid of them in the seventies because they cost too much to administer.......but that was before computers!

Here in Guernsey it is compulsory for dogs to be licenced (£5) and wear a collar and name tag.
Microchipping all dogs is the best idea although stray dogs are rarely seen here now. When I was a child stray dogs were common and many a time I was followed home by a stray (I always wanted to keep them). Our dog came from a rescue centre and was microchipped before we could have her.

Licences were scrapped because of administrations costs. They were issued by the post office.

It's a funny world-

You have TV licences but not dog licences.

We have dog licences but got rid of TV licences 30 years ago!\

In N. I. friend has just had her dog microchipped - no cost - for a certain period of time to encourage dog owners.
