We had a BNP march advertised in our town in the 80's..to go to Birmingham
Trust me , most of the people our age hated the BMP.. skin eads etc but the rumour that went around was that the bus turned up with an Asian driver and went away empty

I'm a great believer in the right to protest, although I personally view the EDL much the same way as I view the BNP. I'm glad everything went relatively peaceful.

Yes, well done West Mercia Police.

With,it appears, excellent policing the EDL have now been escorted out of county after their assembly... 5 arrests, 4 for very minor public order offences and one for breach of bail, and the town has now returned to normal.

Well done to the West Mercia Police :-D

Police tweet that "larger numbers of demonstrators now in the town, some very minor incidents of disorder, but all is now calm.."

hope it stays that way.

The right to 'peaceful protest' is enshrined in law, as it should be GB, but at least the march has been banned ( in light of recent events the police requested it..which is what the local community had hoped)... this way the protesters will not be able to follow the original route ...they will be escorted by police to a given protest point.

"the intent has been stated that they will be trashed"

It does not look very hopefully to have a peaceful demonstration if comments like that have been made.

If a march has been banned then how can they allow a static protest

Do hope nothing happens

one which imo is reasonably intergrated, in that it is not usual to read any reports of unrest. They are being bussed in ( & train etc) from all areas of the country. Shops will be closed, all day in many cases, losing a day's revenue if nothing worse happens ( the intent has been stated that they will be trashed) ... basically the whole town will be at a standstill.

The proposed march by the EDL has been banned, but the static protest has to be allowed. ( as has the counter protest).

Police statement " "Although we will be setting out to be as proactive as possible and nip any trouble in the bud, if problems arise or the assemblies do not remain peaceful we have the capacity to bring in additional officers. People can be reassured that we will not tolerate disorder of any kind and will take robust action to protect people and property. "

Fingers crossed.
