Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 14 Aug 2011 12:28

My paternal Grandfather was German his surname was FAHSE with umlauts over the "a" He changed his name .unofficially to Fasey in the mid 1890,s and lied that he was Bristish born in Bradford(his younger brother had been born there) and joined the British army. So did his elder brother Carl who became Charles Fasey

Both married as Fasey and both died as Fasey in 1911 . Strictly speaking our surname was Fahse but we were all reg as Fasey so thats the family name now.

Thankyou Kath ,i think he was a Bowers but bought up by a relation who married a Long ,so added the Long when he got married :-)

From the marriage that Gwen gives above it looks as if William James was known as Bowers and Long. I suspect that he was born with one of the names and then took on the other (possibly if his mother married after he was born).

As for you - you are whatever your mother registered you as.

Your mothers married name was Long?
Is this how it is shown on their marriage cert for your fathers name?
is your name on your BC shown as Long?
If so your name is Long, that doesn't mean you may have to work on the name Bower Long when researching your family tree.
Hope this helps :-)

But his mothers name should show her maiden name or have I really lost the plot ? Really long time since I have worked on my family tree
Is his middle name Bower or is this part of the surname?
Was his mothers maiden name Long?

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 13 Aug 2011 18:12

Maybe Bower was just a middle name?

Someone on my tree has Bowers as a middle name.
It was the surname of his maternal grandmother and given I guess just to keep the link.
