What a special letter to have Elaine and what a very special man your Dad was to send such words. A letter to treasure for always and to pass on in the family as an heirloom.

I was lucky that my Dad never had to leave us when we were small but he wasn't one to speak of his love for us or even show it much but he was able to be loving with my son and just before he died, he told my Mum he loved us all, which moves me even now, just remembering.

I do recall little things he did for me, which showed his love altho I didn't realise much at the time. He went cycling miles to try and get an ointment someone suggested when I had a bad rash, not recognised by the doctors, on my hands when I was young. Also the time I went away to work and sent home my watch to get him to look at, it stopped working. Later I went home for my 21st birthday and among my presents was a tiny new wristwatch as well as the repaired one, which Dad had gone out specially to buy me as an extra gift. It wasn't that expensive but the thought behind it was priceless. I have tears in my eyes thinking of it even now, when I opened it, and Mum said Dad went out specially to get that. He who never bought the gifts, it was always Mum who did the shopping.

Don't forget that one day, not too soon I hope, you and your Dad will be together again.

Hugs

That was a real kind thing to share with us when it must mean so much to you. It really tugs at the heart strings.

Youve no idea how after all these years 67 to be precise it has affected me. I am again the little girl whose daddy had to go to war. 5 years ago my sister and I went on a top to toe tour of Italy retracing his steps, it was wonderful. We love Italy and have been to Florence this year and we are going to Lake Como in October. But the place we hold dearest is Sorrento. As my father had a beautiful tenor voice he used to sing the song back to Sorrento to my mum and when she died (after my dad) we sent her to him with that song.

What a marvelous treasure and although it brings tears to your eyes, it's wonderful to feel his love so tenderly expressed.
He will always be close.

In my picture here is the dress that I wore while dad was in Italy. In fact mum sent him the photo which he had coloured by hand out there. I found this among his letters while clearing my computer/ art/ sewing room out two days ago and it broke my heart on reading it. My dad left me again in 1981 when he died but his words have made him come so close to me. Elaine.

My Dear daughter,
I am writing this so you can read when you are able to understand what heartaches are. I do hope you don't have to suffer like your mother and I are doing. At this moment we are at least 2000apart, I in Italy and you and your mother and Sandra in England. Your mother and I are madly in love with each other after nearly 10 years of married life, so you can guess what this parting means to us. If people in this crazy world would only realise and be satisfied with a little happiness, there would be no more war. I am longing just now to see you and to hold your mother in my arms would be delightful, but I am afraid I have to live on memories for a while. Well Elaine I send you all my love and kisses and hope I shall see you soon. Lots of love and kisses xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx daddy xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
