Regarding the emoticons, it must be some sort of browser/os problem. I can see them (Vista/IE9) . When they had the christmas versions and reverted too normal, some people saw the changes immediately, some (including me) had to refresh, and some went for days before they reverted.

I love the new look but agree that some members who have sight problems will find the screen a tad too bright.

Would it be a huge task for GR to 'tone brightness' down.....just a thought :-)

Adeline Report 1 Aug 2012 10:13

Adjusting the brightness on the PC just for this site is not a solution for me.

I agree about the back ground and the text.

Where are the exciting updates? mentioned in
http://www.genesreunited.co.za/boards/board/announcements/thread/1306585

I don't like it very much but like everything else will have to get used to it :-(

The tree looks insipid

I have real problems reading black text on a white background.
Turned the brighness down on the PC but it is still hard on my light sensitive eyes .
A larger/bold font would have helped....just a wee bit.
Edit:
Just located my heavily tinted reading specs... and the screen is still too bright.
Thank goodness I have an optician appointment on Monday!

You have three options:

(a) scream 'n holler at Genes Support - best of luck

(b) Using Firefox
Tools | Options | Colors
Disable "Allow pages to choose their own colors instead of my selections above"

Now you can set either custom color or select "use system colors" and then GRU will be in the same colors as for XP/Win7 etc.
You can also set your own preferred font.
However the changes will apply to all web sites.

IE, Chrome, Opera have similar functions.

(c) if you are using Firefox you can run a GreaseMonkey script which will customise the look n feel for any site without affecting other sites. GreaseMonkey is free and there is lots of user help available.

I only suggested adjusting the brightness because one member who did the beta testing said it worked for them,

It never worked for me and is not practical for some

I think GR will have to do something about this problem but only if members complain

Everyone will soon get used to it.......there was bigger hollerin when we first got the pale green with flock wallpaper and purple ,,,,,,some said they couldnt see text and kicked up such a storm........after a few weeks nobody complained ever again.

I'm sure GR will have consulted the proper people with regards comfort for people with eye problems........

There is another thread going about the same thing on the suggestions board

I have set it up as follows:

text: yellow
background: dark grey
visited links: red
unvisted links: light blue
font: Roboto (from Android)

Looks fine. I suggest that Gru offers this as an alternative color scheme.

I have no idea why Gru tro to prevent users from customising colors fonts and backgrounds as they wish.

Rollo - Do you personalised colour changes apply if you visit another site, or only to this one?

The adverse comments seem to be mainly from people with sight problems, some but not all, who are of the more elderly persuasion who may be concerned with tinkering with their settings. (or downloading another programme)

GlasgowLass Report 1 Aug 2012 13:48

My daughter fixed my screen to my preference.
I have a coloured screen and a larger font
I need to use Firefox instead of Safari.... and the colour change?
Yes Detective, it does apply to all other sites that I visit using Firefox
