When does an age gap in a relationship become acceptable...for example I used to date men who were 10 or so years older than me when I was over the age of 18 without comment...but obviously it becomes an issue if say a 15 yr old dated a 25 yr old......or does it?

Sharron Report 6 Jan 2013 12:17

Somebody I was at school with married a man 27 years her senior

. Now I am looking after my dad, loosely, and she is in the same position with her husband!

AnnCardiff Report 6 Jan 2013 12:22

hmmmmm - relevant to me this is - am in a "relationship" with someone who is 12 years younger!!! it's good but I have severe migivings about it

I certainly would of had something to say if my daughter started seeing a man 10 yrs older or even 5 yrs when she was under 16 ...infact the bloke would of been set away with more that my boot in his backside. Yuk makes me skin crawl :-(

Muffyxx Report 6 Jan 2013 12:25

I'm of the opinion that age doesn't matter except as Hayley says if one of the partners involved is a minor.

...So I think you're ok Ann lol.

Silly Sausage

Silly Sausage Report 6 Jan 2013 12:29

Yes I mean a minor :-D

Sharron Report 6 Jan 2013 12:29

I always thought I would not want to be in a relationship with a man who was younger than me,it just didn't seem right.

Then OH came along, who is two and a half years younger than me.

Now I know just how right I was!

SheilaWestWilts Report 6 Jan 2013 12:32

I don't see why a minor should be treated any better or worse on his/her 'dates' by a 25 year old than by one of the same age. It's all about trust and respect.

I would imagine, though, that a 25 year old with 'honourable intentions' may feel uncomfortable dating a minor and be concerned about parent's reactions!

Nyx Report 6 Jan 2013 12:32

If the relationship works it works, but I think it depends on the 'maturity' of those involved rather than the age.....

Muffyxx Report 6 Jan 2013 12:41

I'm like Hayley in that I'd be highly sceptical if a man over 20 came knocking at the door for my underage daughter.....however mature she may appear....

Sharron Report 6 Jan 2013 13:20

I think the fact that he was knocking on your door and not meeting her somewhere out of the way would speak volumes about his intentions.

Merlin Report 6 Jan 2013 13:23

So there does,nt seem to be a lot of you interested in "Toyboys" Then. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Kay???? Report 6 Jan 2013 13:32

Age can matter----------in time,,, and can show up in many areas for many different reasons depending on what the relationship was built on.

Hugh Hefner just married, hes 86 ,,her 26,,,,,,,,,he was back in his usual garb of PJ an hour later..!! :-D :-D,,,,,,,,,mind he may have emplyed a standin...... :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D.

VIVinHERTS Report 6 Jan 2013 14:27

My ex was 9 years older than me and in his late 50's he became 'old' very quickly and set in his ways. I try to be young at heart and flexible. We divorced!

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 6 Jan 2013 14:58

Our Sil is 11 years younger than our daughter. They are very happy and the age difference isn't that obvious She is a young 50,s plus and he is an old 40,s plus so they meet in the middle.. :-D :-D :-D

Mersey Report 6 Jan 2013 16:45

I have a toyboy (very proud of him I am too) :-D <3...but if you would have told me this years ago I would never have believed you, I really liked the older man but found they are very set in there ways and can become boring !!.... I know this is not everybodys thoughts but for me personally Older is not for me !! I need someone who can keep up with me and also put up with me :-D :-D :-D ;-)

LadyScozz Report 7 Jan 2013 08:44

MOTH is 5 1/2 years younger than I am

Get them young and train them right!

Or as MOTH says........ get them old, they're already trained :-D

ChrisofWessex Report 7 Jan 2013 12:14

My aunt married a man 18 yrs older. Difference never mattered - until he retired. As aunt said he came home, sat in front of tv and waited to die. He was healthy, had always been very active.

She being 47 and children married off, wanted to do things, nothing sensational, holiday, go out for the day etc. but no.

When she was 53 she married a widower - same age - and began life anew.

Mayfield Report 7 Jan 2013 12:33

Well my wife is a cradle-snatcher as I’m 3 years younger!

Seriously though as long as both are of adult age and not vulnerable in any way I don’t see it’s anyone else’s business. I can see problems in later life when the younger partner may feel “trapped” but that’s something they will hopefully consider. Perhaps the 20 or 30 years of happiness are well worth the risk, after all many people of the same age will suffer similar troubles due to ill health.

Mmm now if I was a rich old man in my later years and a pretty young thing latched on to me……., what a way to go!

Mayfield :-D

GinN Report 7 Jan 2013 15:19

My Hubby is 5 years younger than me, I've always preferred younger men. He has never felt younger, though, and has always really looked after me.
My daughter is just the opposite. When she was 18, she finished with her boyfriend, who was five years older , and became engaged to his father, who was 46! We were mortified - thank goodness it didn't last!!
