I have a pink paper one, it runs out the day before I am 70 so 2017, that's not so far off now :>(( If they use my passport photo for the new licences, I will hate it as it's an awful photo lol

The green ones should be just about finished soon, as at 70 you need a a new licence anyway........so its a photo jobby

Bob

still got my little red book licences somewhere......as i got a renewal, I peeled off the new one, and re stuck it into the old book.......so its got a few licences in it......including my motor bike licence acting as a provisional, for my car lessons....

and got some fuel ration books somewhere....LOL

All European licences are being updated so that they are all the same . They will all look alike except for the English one will have UK on it the Spanish one Es etc. I know this because I had to go this week with mine and have a mini medical and a rolling road driving test. Under 65's will be renewed every 10 years and over 65's every 5 years. If you have 'Residence' in another country you will have to take the licence of that country when your current UK one expires or before that date if you want to. The process should be completed by January 2015.

I didn't like it when I had to change from a red book licence to a green paper one.

Now I am going to have to do it all again.

*DVLC is going to write to all the people with the old green style licence and make them change to a photo one*

Pftt! I like my old style paper version - it's becoming a rarity! Anyway, with a surname towards the end of the alphabet, with a bit of luck I won't have to pay by the time they get round to it ;-)

SuffolkVera Report 18 Jan 2013 11:07

I had to renew mine last year and did it online. I didn't have to send a new photo. As I had a current passport I just had to give them the number and somehow they electronically transferred my passport photo to my new driving licence. So now I look an old hag on both!

Apparently DVLC is going to write to all the people with the old green style licence and make them change to a photo one. Not sure when this is happening. I'm sure its just to get more money out of us.

Just done mine, they sent me a renewal invitation form. Had to do it as we changed address anyway.

So now I just look bloody older than I did on my last one :-(

Huia Report 17 Jan 2013 23:48

The first time they issued licences (here in NZ) with photos on, I am sure they squashed my photo. My head looked shorter and wider.

Our police occasionally stop all traffic on a road to check that vehicles are licenced and have current WOF, and they also ask us to speak our name into the gadget which I think might check for alcohol on the breath. They also ask if we have our licence with us, and ask to see it. It happened to me recently. When I was asked to state my full name into the machine I gave the first 2 names and then she pulled the gadget away before I have given my surname! When I pointed that out she said it was ok, she believed me. Obviously no booze on my breath. :-D

I think it was Sir Ernest Shackleton who said that, if you resemble your passport photograph then you are not well enough to travel.

British driving licence doesn't have to be renewed?

In Oz we have to renew them, usually every five or ten years. Just another way of the govt grabbing our money.

:-(

But we don't need a licence to watch tv lol

My husband nearly got caught out last year. Luckily our daughter was on the ball and realised that she had had hers for ten years around that time and told her Dad which made him check his. I think a lot of people think they are valid almost forever like the old paper ones were. M

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 17 Jan 2013 23:26

apparently
the photo renewal is aimed at the younger set......their appearance can change quite dramatically, but the older drivers' photo stays much the same.......so at 75 I dont need a new picture but an assurance that I am still physically and mentally able........

My passport still has 3 years to go - and I look NOTHING like my photo!
In the past 7 years my very short hair is now long, and 'put up', The colour has changed from dyed maroon to dyed light brown/blonde/grey (depending on what's on offer) and I've put on over 2 stone

Sharron

Sharron Report 17 Jan 2013 23:24

You would have to be stopped for something else before they wanted to have a look at your licence.
