Not a good idea ... arriving at LHR with a gas mask will suggest you are considering a gas attack ( one of the current worries of security) . Even if you got managed to get it on board the hostess would freak out if you wore it, flight would be diverted for emergency landing etc |

OH always seems to get stuck next to someone who is coughing and spluttering and often manages to contract a bug, which he then passes on to me :-D. Luckily he doesn't fly that much on business now. I find I get a very dry throat on flights and drink quite a lot (not alcohol as that makes me feel worse!) |

Your problem is caused by the cabin air coming from the bleed off valve on one of the engines. More recent aircraft take in the air directly and hence asthmatics do not suffer in the same way. |
