Not a good idea ... arriving at LHR with a gas mask will suggest you are considering a gas attack ( one of the current worries of security) . Even if you got managed to get it on board the hostess would freak out if you wore it, flight would be diverted for emergency landing etc

So give it a try then we could all larf.
fwiw it would not help with the problem anyway.

OH always seems to get stuck next to someone who is coughing and spluttering and often manages to contract a bug, which he then passes on to me :-D. Luckily he doesn't fly that much on business now. I find I get a very dry throat on flights and drink quite a lot (not alcohol as that makes me feel worse!)

Your problem is caused by the cabin air coming from the bleed off valve on one of the engines. More recent aircraft take in the air directly and hence asthmatics do not suffer in the same way.

In order to benefit from the new technology fly a fairly new plane ( < 2 years old ) such as 380, Dreamliner with AirFrance, BA, Gulf, Qantas etc. No chance with RyanAir et al or most package firms. Yes, the tickets are not cheap.

Another poss. is to fly Biggles Airways, short hops on turbo props.

I have just returned from holiday. I suffer from Asthma and bronchitis and once again I have a severe chest infection. It has been suggested that this is caused by the air conditioning on the flight. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to prevent this happening again?

Two not very helpful suggestions so far

Go by boat
Stay in UK
