It seems to me that sending them to prison doesn't work either. They just seem to learn how to be better criminals in there. I don't know what the answer is though. :-(

Never believed there is any evidence that the death penalty would stop these crimes. Thinking about one of the worst criminals of my generation - Ian Brady - a truly evil man.

He would have loved to be executed. I believe. Why give these evildoers the favour of a quick end. If a criminal would ever be put off his mindless and disgusting crimes, surely rotting in a prison cell for 40 years would be more of a disincentive that a quick death.

I don't believe it is a deterrent and I am, and always have been, against the death penalty.

Even with modern technology, mistakes can still be made, or evidence can be inconclusive. Modern offenders are much more careful about not leaving physical traces. 'Old fashioned' detective work is still needed.

No it's not a deterrent, that has been proven by the crime figures in the US states and other countries that still have the death penalty.

Leslie - it doesn't seem so long ago that the 'Birmingham Six' et al would have been facing the death penalty.

They were all 'lucky' that it was not in force then.

All those mistakes were long ago...There wasn't the technology there is now to help prove these crimes....I say yes to hanging and bring back other punishments...They made me a better person....£25,000 per annum..Car and driver and I'd do the job... Tax free and all expenses paid without any quibble... If you can't beat 'em join 'em...LES...

I don't agree with capital punishment, but life should be their entire life and no luxuries either.

You only have to look to America where they still have capital punishment in many states to see just how effective it is.

And 1 person hanged for a crime they did not commit is 1 person too many.

i think it should be for peadophiles, but like has been said mistakes are made how could we be 100% sure they were guilty

it didn't, and mistakes were made - thinking of poor Timothy Evans who was wrongly hanged with Reginald Christie the main witness against him, when in fact Christie was the perpertrator

This is not a thread to suggest we do or do not, although by all means state your opinion.

My question is would it act as a deterrent as most killers don't think they will be brought to justice.


Would the little USA gang member wannabe in the UK think about the result carrying a knife might have?

Would a paedophile be put off committing his or her crime?

Would the oik waving a gun or knife under the nose of a shop assistant think it could happen to him?

Yes it would be satisfying for those who wanted justice and there would be no repeat offenders, but do you think it would deter?
