No mobile as she will get one in Guatemala :-( Delta were being so obstructive I couldn't believe it!

It's because of her medical problems we panicked so much, 6 years ago she was stuck in the airport in the States for about the same time and became quite unwell but she had her brother with her then. This time she was on her own.

Why couldn´t the airline have told her brother that the connecting flight had come in late. They must have known that they had transit passengers who had missed the flight & why.
Planes don´t normally take off unless all the passengers on the flight manifest are accounted for.

Thanks Sylvia and EOS.

Son booked the flights from Guatemala. We will book from here or family in USA will book flights when she comes back.

We don't have to worry about that for ages though as her employer gave her a 12 month sabbatical :-D

Dear SuperCrutch

Hello

What a relief your daughter is safe.

I fully understand the strain you were put through so unnecessarily
and I am really sorry you were treated like this.

I thought the airlines were supposed to lose your luggage, not persons.

The mind boggles.

Take very gentle care of yourself
Very best wishes and love

Glad that everything worked out well

Not sure why you went with Delta ................... they don't have that good a reputation over here

although I see they are hooking up with Virgin for transatlantic flights.

They're also taking over other US airlines ................... that can be either good or bad, based on previous experiences with US airlines!

Her brother's voice betrayed his fears when he phoned me. I dug my friend out of bed and she made drinks whilst I ran up my phone bill!

The photo of her with her brother once they had met was absolutely lovely :-D

As she has multiple sclerosis and is pretty deaf we are going to book her return flight next year a) assisted and b) on another airline!!!!!

What a nightmare journey Sue.

I'm pleased to hear that she arrived safely eventually.
Can just imagine her brother searching for her and wondering at what point he should phone UK.
Better information could indeed have saved alot of worry for you and your family.

Lets hope the return trip is a better journey.

Friends on FB know the story but somewhere between Heathrow and Atlanta Delta lost my daughter!

My son phoned me to say she hadn't arrived in Guatemala City, she never made the flight. At 4.15 a.m. UK time I am in a complete panic. Hubby was at his Mother's house in Kent, luckily I had a friend staying with me.

I phoned:

UK plod
British Consulate in Atlanta (re-routed to London)
American Embassy
Atlanta Police Dept
Atlanta Airport Police
Various family members in the USA and UK.

Atlanta police were brilliant, the others are rated between hopeless and worse than hopeless.

I had to give a full description, what she was wearing etc., the Consulate told me they could only confirm if she had been arrested, hospitalised or had died.

Delta Airlines did NOT have an emergency call line and I had to wait until 8 a.m. for their Heathrow desk to open. They told me she hadn't made the connected flight and had no idea why.

So we, as a family, were panicking all this time because if the missed flight was her fault she would have to buy another ticket (in US dollars using a US credit card).......been through this before :-( plus we hadn't heard a word (but she had no mobile with her).

I phoned Delta back, with the hump, and stamped both feet and found out that the Heathrow to Atlanta was late arriving and clearing customs and immigration meant she missed the flight to Guatemala. More information was not available.

She finally arrived 17.5 hours late, yep Delta was late arriving again! They had taxied her to an hotel for the night and back to the airport for the new flight.

Now if one person in the US or in the UK had the brains to tell me the truth we would have avoided countless grey hairs.

The Foreign Office phoned me to make sure everything was OK, so they get brownie points. The airline gets an enormous raspberry

:-P
