Have you seen the movie "The Man who went up a Hill and came down a Mountain"? Nice film, not deep & meaningful, but very entertaining.

I don't remember all the surnames, but there were lots of Morgans...... including the owner of the pub, who was known as "Morgan The Goat".

:-D

We still use that form of name today:

Dewi the gas
Geraint llaeth

This evening we have Merv the Gas coming to the house...lolol

Please note my family name below! *groans*.

In the census records as the enumerators were English place names are a nightmare from around Bala where my family hail from. If the village's name started with Ll the rest of it could be gibberish :-( Lucky for me the other side were from Abergele :-D

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 3 Sep 2013 10:09

From my genealogical studies I have learned that there was at one time a dire shortage of different surnames available to the Welsh. In 1891 for instance in excess of 93% of the population were either a Jones, an Evans or a Williams. This of course could easily cause confusion as to exactly which Jones, Evans or Williams in the community people were referring to when they were talking about them.

In an attempt to avoid such confusion it became common practice to drop the surname entirely but to add a link to the individual's trade or calling to the persons forename so that the listener would immediately recognise which Jones, Evans or Williams the speaker was referring to.

As a result the local landlords agent became known as Owen the Rent and his cousin (On his mother's side) who was the village undertaker became universally known as Dai the Death.

Has anyone else got any other examples of this uniquely Welsh tradition? ;-)
