thank you all for your time , , i do have a copy copy, of the banns (proclamation) 25th jul 1846, then says married 12 aug 1846, , devon clackmannanshire, i was told there was only banns for the marriage, i dont want to get just the same record ,to what i have, because it would be a waste of time & money, with no parents, James Gordon is such a common name, ,so hard to pin point to one place, ,

The son called James b 1829 does not appear in the family household on either census year.
At 1841, he would have been about 12yrs old yet I cannot locate any James Gordon working in Inverurie in this census year?

hello everyone, thank you for all your replies, also my error james Gordon married robina Allan by proclamation of banns 25 jul 1846 devon clkmn, & wed 12 aug 1846, .the 1871 census has brother william gordon has 78, error should be 18yrs, ,also mary sister 10yrs -

i have looked at the possibly of william Gordon & janet Sangster, being james parents, & william the father was a man servant to the gordons of inverurie , ,& his son was born there, , but it would have made him only about 17yrs when he wed at clackmannan, & robina 8 years older, the children were all named after grand parents , going down the family, my direct line is always the son james gordon but in this couple william was the 1st born & then janet ,

I tried... and failed!
I looked at the 1841 census in Clackmannan.
There was only one other Gordon family who lived in Tillicoultry where the head of household was NOT born in the county.
This was the family of William Gordon ( bc1817) and Margaret Binnie who married in 1839.
William was also a coal miner

I tracked this family, they lived in Clackmannan, Paisley Renfrewshire and Cambusnethan Lanarkshire.
They may have emigrated to the US after 1861 as that;s where some their children were at 1880
This man was known as William Russell Gordon but after locating him on 2 census returns his place of birth is consistent..... Kinross

As the marriage was 1846, it is on an OPR
Parents are listed on statutory records..from 1855 onwards

If you were to get a image of his marriage from scotlandspeople, it should show his parents on it.

I noticed James's place of birth is Aberdeen on all census returns from 1851 through to 1871. Occupation is a coal miner.

Coal miners usually came from mining families

As there were no mines in Aberdeen, how did he become a coal miner in Clackmannan?
I wonder if he moved to the area as a child or an adult?

Edit:
It may be worth checking poor relief records in Clackmannanshire to see if he or anyone else made an application on his behalf

This is the couple who married in 1846 - whether or not they're "yours". William and Mary are maybe James's parents? (Ancestry has them transcribed as son and daughter of James & Robina, which obviously is not correct.)

Where did you get the info re a marriage in 1844 to Robina Fife?

This is the only marriage of a James Gordon to a Robina on ScotlandsPeople, 1837 - 50.

Have you discounted this one? A bit younger than the census ages given for your man.

it would be lovely to come across someone researching my great g/dad, by census 1851 he was 25yrs born inverurie aberdeenshire scotland, 1861 he is 36yrs coalminer, 1871 he is 55yrs (age gone up 20yrs) & died 1871 aged 50yrs, so a mystery he is, no parents on his death cert, wed by banns, ive been looking since 1992 , , his age is up & down in census, & he was younger i believe ,than robina Fife his wife,, they wed 1844, but i just cant find him in 1841 census, so has ive said, wouldnt it be wonderful, if somebody has been searching for a brother to their line , my direct line,&iam stuck , any Gordons researching inverurie please, :-)
