IGP ...............

yes we do know the date ................. as would you if you had followed what Sharon said.

FYI ....................... it is prior to 1965

InspectorGreenPen Report 4 Aug 2014 16:33

Do we know what date we are talking about? There is the assumption here the surname does not actually appear on a Birth Certificate.

Whilst this used to be the case, since 1969 (I think this was the year it changed - it could have been later, though) the surname does appear, and to make things even more complicated it can be whatever name the mother chooses - it does not even have to be that of the father or mother!

Don't forget too that the GRO Index is just that. An index. Whilst it appears to be current practice to index all possible combinations of names if there is any ambiguity, this is not guaranteed. Then of course what you search on line is yet another index of the GRO index, in itself subject to further inconsistencies.

Personally I think that is the only explanation.

I know a person didn't have to show marriage cert but to get herself (mother)out of a tight hole she had maybe dropped herself in she had to tell a little white lie.

Sharon shouldn't be worrying over the surname she was registered in as she is a lovely caring, thoughtful person.. :-D :-) :-D <3 <3 <3 for Sharon.

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Aug 2014 22:12

Sue ...

i also wondered if that was one explanation .....................

but you didn't have to show "proof" of marriage ...... eg, marriage certificate

Her mother could have also thought so much about registering Sharon in Smith she said Smith as her maiden name.

Don't forget back then they asked if the person was married to the father.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Aug 2014 21:03

patchem ...............

could be.

It is what is showing on all the records.

Maybe Sharon should contact the Records Office, and see if they will tell her what those records say?

patchem Report 3 Aug 2014 20:53

I thought that on Sharon's birth certificate, which she has in her possession, her Mother is given as Phyllis Hodgson nee Saw, and Father as David Smith, but on the records it is only showing as Smith/Smith, so a mistake on the part of the GRO?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Aug 2014 20:36

I've just checked, and it is all as Sharon says

May I hazard a guess??

Phyllis and David were not married, and she did not want to lie ........ but did want his name on the certificate.

I wonder if it is a plain mistake on Phyllis' part??

She gave Smith as her maiden name in error?

Sharon

Sharon Report 3 Aug 2014 17:03

Sue, her middle name was Joan

Have another look, this time with your surname as Hodgson.

It could be that the Gro listing has been double (or triply ) entered/transcribed to reflect all the adults surnames. There might even have been a transcription error somewhere along the line.

If you were born before 1973 have a look on freebmd. If they have got round to your entry, click on the page number. That will show you all the other names that were on the same page. Freebmd intend to transcribe the register up to 1983 but they haven't got there yet.

As a point of interest, a BC only assigns a child their first names. It's convention that the child normally uses their father's surname. As long as it isn't for illegal purposes, you use what ever name you want!

Did your mother have a middle name ?

Sharon

Sharon Report 3 Aug 2014 11:10

Thanks all. My birth cert says sharon Ivy smith.
My mothers name was Phyllis Hodgson nee Saw.
On my birth cert it says father David Smith.
But the only match here says mothers maiden name smith.
Confusing or what
:-(

A while back, I had one point left at Scotland's People.

Searched for myself...... first, middle & surname.

Nothing.

Tried again, first & surname.

Success! Sort of.......... whoever entered the information couldn't type, the only vowel in my middle name was left out!

:-(

I did let SP know, and was promised it would be corrected. Last time I checked, it had not been corrected.

Andysmum Report 2 Aug 2014 22:04

Sharon, don't forget that your surname isn't on your birth certificate, only those of your mother and/or father.

So you could be registered under either of those - it is usually assumed to be the father, but doesn't have to be.

Good Luck.

Bobtanian Report 2 Aug 2014 21:28

I found one of my cousins' birth, by checking births under his mothers maiden name(she wasn't married at the time of birth) on Free BMD and her subsequent husband gave the lad, his name, so he wasn't a "smith" but really a "brown"

if you get what I mean....

Sharon, have you checked the records on any other site?

Kay????

Kay???? Report 2 Aug 2014 18:40

Just a thought, have you checked to see if its registered under your mums maiden name? or it could be down as GRANT.?

Dont forget the birth indexes only cover England and Wales on this site.
