The marriage for Godfrey to wife Sarah shows James Pearson for 'father', that is unlikely given the age of James but not impossible given that the age is rounded down on the census.

West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1935 about Godfrey Gill
Name: Godfrey Gill
Birth Year: abt 1829
Age: 21
Marriage or Bann Date: 22 Sep 1850
Parish: Elland, St Mary
Father's Name: James Pearson
Spouse's Name: Sarah Pollard
Spouse's Father's Name: Samu

possible marriage?

West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1935 about James Pearson
Name: James Pearson
Marriage or Bann Date: 18 Mar 1833
Parish: Elland, St Mary
Spouse's Name: Hannah Gill

So could be that Mary and Godfrey were Hannah's children ( if she was older than 30) or her siblings.

adelle

adelle Report 18 Sep 2014 13:34

don't think Godfrey would call james his dad if he was his bro inlaw, so I'm thinking hannah married had Godfrey n Mary n then re married

Rambling Report 18 Sep 2014 13:41

It may not be significant but none of Godfrey's children was named James.

adelle

adelle Report 18 Sep 2014 13:47

i was referring to his marriage record he lists james as his dad so maybe its his mothers 2nd husband

A different thought .....................

On ancestry ............ the 1841 shows as this

1841 Census

Name: Godfrey Gill
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829
Gender: Male
Where born: Yorkshire, England
Civil Parish: Halifax
Hundred: Morley
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

Registration district: Halifax
Sub-registration district: Rastrick
Neighbors: View others on page
Piece: 1303
Book: 15
Folio: 20
Page Number: 4

Godfrey Gill 12
Mary Gill 15

When I looked at the image, the Pearson household was separated from the 2 Gills by a single black line

There was a double black line after Mary's name

The double black line indicates a separate house

A single black line indicates a different household within the same building .................... think of it in terms of "flats", or as was most likely in those days, rooms in a house.

The house where the Pearsons and the Gills were living appears to have a total of 5 different households living in it

All these were living in that same house, I have separated the names into the units indicated by a single black mark separating them, so I hope it is clear what I am trying to say! .................

Hannah Tyas abt 1761 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire

Robert Buckley abt 1809 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Emma Buckley abt 1827 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire

John Walker abt 1801 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Sophia Walker abt 1806 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Sarah Walker abt 1826 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Ruth Walker abt 1828 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
William Walker abt 1834 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Eliza Hannah abt 1837 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire

James Pearson abt 1811 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Hannah Pearson abt 1811 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Elizabeth Pearson abt 1834 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Jere Pearson abt 1838 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Shepherd Pearson abt 1841 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire

Godfrey Gill abt 1829 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire
Mary Gill abt 1826 Yorkshire, England Halifax, Yorkshire

Both Gills are old enough to be at work, and away from their parents.

It could well be therefore that there was no relationship between the Pearsons and the Gills ..................... just that the 2 Gills happened to have a room in the same house.

Shepherd seems to have been a much more common given name than you might think. There's even a Shepherd Shepherd on freeBMD.

Sylvia, except that on Godfrey's marriage father is listed as James Pearson? so seems a little unlikely that the two in 1841 are not somehow related?

RR .................

yes, I did note that ........

......... I was just intrigued when I looked at the image and thought it worth posting that the Gills were not in fact living with the Pearsons, so had not apparently been taken in by them as adelle suggested in her OP.
