PART 1

WALES Under 20s v ENGLAND Under 20s-
Saturday, February 7th 2015

I have watched a game that put the Seniors to shame!

Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish, and building to a nerve wracking and exciting crescendo!

WALES UNDER 20s HAVE BEATEN ENGLAND UNDER 20s..... 21-15

ENGLAND TEAM

Backs:
15. Piers O'Conor; 14. George Perkins; 13. Joe Marchant; 12. Max Clark; 11. Howard Packman; 10. Rory Jennings; 9. Stu Townsend;

Forwards:

THE MATCH, FIRST HALF (Part 1):

The two teams met at Parc Eiras, Colwyn Bay, North Wales, where a packed crowd awaited the home team with great excitement. At Parc Eiras, there is always a great atmosphere and the singing is fantastic!

After seeing their senior team beaten by England the night before, it must have been with some trepidation that Wales Under 20s stepped onto the pitch, for their first match in this year's Under 20s Six Nations Championship.

Wales Under 20s had not beaten England Under 20s for 10 matches. Indeed last year, they were humiliatingly defeated by the England Under 20s, 67-7!

In the 70 matches played since the Under 20s age group was created, England have won 56 and lost just 14.
They have won four Six Nations titles (2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013) and two Junior World Championship titles (2013, 2014). What a daunting task lay ahead for Wales Under 20s!

If our Welsh boys did feel any nervousness before the match, it disappeared very quickly. Wales met fire with fire! They played with great confidence, skill, and heart.

Wales’ Fly Half Dan Jones kicked off to start this exciting match. They are immediately playing strongly and with confidence.

Within minutes Wales get a penalty, for England for not releasing, and Dan Jones puts Wales’ first points on the board with a Penalty goal.

WALES U20s, 3 ~ ENGLAND U20s, 0

NEXT, A BAD INCIDENT!

The TMO is asked to investigate a late tackle by England’s Charlie Beckett on Wales Scrum Half Tom Williams.

The incident was shown repeatedly, from various angles. This was a particularly nasty incident, with Beckett, who was tackling Williams when he was not in possession of the ball (an offence in itself) but he also deliberately rammed his elbow into Williams’ throat!

Beckett is given a YELLOW CARD, and to be quite honest, he was fortunate that it wasn’t a red card. So it was 10 minutes in the Sinbin for him, with England now playing a man short for 10 minutes.

The first Try of the match came for England by James Chisholm which was converted by Rory Jennings.

WALES U 20s, 3 ~ ENGLAND U 20s, 7

England are looking dangerous again, as they race toward the Tryline with Wales Full Back Dafydd Howells in hot pursuit!
England’s Left Wing Howard Packman (one to watch for the future) catches the ball with Dafydd attempting to catch it too. Howard dives over the line ball goes down. Was it a TRY?

My opinion was NO. He appeared to lose control of the ball and there seemed to be no downward pressure! It goes to the TMO. They agree. NO TRY!

One thing that I liked about England’s young player- When he was being congratulated by fellow teammate, he shook his head and said “no”. He didn’t celebrate and act like he had a try hoping he could get away with it!

A FUNNY INCIDENT!

England are looking extremely dangerous at the Welsh Tryline. Wales are defending the line with all their might. An England player slips and loses the ball. Wales Fly Half Dan Jones gets the ball.

At this point, I am shouting at the telly “KICK IT!”
Dan obliges! He kicks it out into touch.... smack into a young woman’s pint of lager, knocking it clean out of her hand! Lager splashing everywhere!
BUT AT LEAST IT SAVED THE DAY!:-D :-D :-D

Dan Jones put another 3 points on the score board for Wales, with a penalty Goal at 29 minutes.
WALES U20s, 6 ~ ENGLAND U20s, 7

More dangerous play!
Wales are having to defend hard at their Tryline.
Wales’ 15, Dafydd Howells, kicks it away, but it doesn’t find touch! The ball is back into English hands, and JOE MARCHANT gets England’s second Try of the match.

Rory Jennings kicks the conversion, but it goes to the left!

WALES U20s, 6 ~ ENGLAND U20s, 12

A High Tackle by England’s Charlie Ewels on Wales’ Liam Belcher earns him a warning by the referee, and gives Wales a penalty.
Wales kick for position.. Line-out .. Up, down and drive!
The ensuing driving maul gives BELCHER and Wales the ultimate revenge, as he lands the ball over the Tryline!

THIS RESULTS IN HANDBAGS! Pushing and jostling by both sides.
The ref calls for Wales’ Tom Williams and England’s James Chisholm who had been pushing Williams’ neck. They are both warned by the ref!

The conversion attempt is still to come. When things calmed down, Dan Jones takes the kick, but it goes right!

The clock goes red for half time

HALF-TIME SCORE:

WALES U 20s, 11 ~ ENGLAND U 20s, 12

PART 2

WALES Under 20s v ENGLAND Under 20s

SECOND HALF:

England Fly Half, Rory Jennings, kicks off for Second Half.

Excellent play by the young Welsh boys now, especially from number 7, Harri Keddie, who makes ground with a great run.
Ref blows the whistle for a Wales Penalty, as England did not release in the tackle.

DAN JONES gets another Penalty Goal to send Wales into the lead.

WALES U 20s, 14 ~ ENGLAND U 20s, 12

More brilliant playing by both teams now, including a brilliant “steal” by Wales’
Right Wing, Josh Adams. So far Wales have had 70% of the territory to England’s 30%.
Penalties for infringements go back and fore, first to England, then to Wales, and so on.

SECOND YELLOW CARD FOR ENGLAND

England’s KIERAN TREADWELL takes a Wales player out in the air at Line-out.
He is called by the ref, who says that he has been involved in too many penalties and he is given a Yellow Card.

The penalty given to Wales for this results in a fantastic Drive to the edge of the Tryline.
However, Wales Prop, Luke Garrett gets too eager, does not keep his head, and goes “in at the side”, so Wales are penalised and do not get the Try they hoped for!

THIRD ENGLAND YELLOW CARD

Wales get a penalty for English player “coming up in the scrum”.
Wales kicks for the corner.
The boys are almost on the England Tryline for the Line-out.

Wales fans are singing “HYMNS AND ARIAS” on top of their voices in excitement.
Wales catch the ball.

A DRIVING Maul ensues, which is illegally brought down by England Prop Paul Hill.....AND IT’S ANOTHER YELLOW CARD! England are now down to just 13 players!

A new line-out for Wales. They drive over the line, despite another attempt by England to pull it down, which has gone unnoticed! This time it’s TOM PHILLIPS that gets the Try for Wales!

It’s a hard kick for Wales’ Fly Half to convert the Try, but this time he does it!

WALES U 20s, 21 ~ ENGLAND U 20s, 12

GARETH JENKINS

Pitchside Interviewer DOT DAVIES now talks to former Wales Head Coach Gareth Jenkins.
Gareth Jenkins is now Head of Development/Recruitment of The Scarlets' . He will be at the match keenly watching the potential of the players.

Dot asks Gareth “Are we witnessing anything special here?”

Gareth replies “It’s electric here! This crowd and this atmosphere, created by the North of Wales supporting Wales, is absolutely wonderful. These Welsh players are responding magnificently!”

Dot..” What’s impressed you most about them?”

Gareth .. “ The intensity and the passion that they are showing is outstanding! There’s good game structure and a good game pattern. They are playing against quite a formidable team. This team have won the World Cup.

I have to say, at this moment, Wales is outplaying England!”

BACK TO THE MATCH

Because of the Yellow Card given to the front line player, England have to substitute another player for a Prop for the scrums.

The Wales fans are now singing Welsh Favourite “CALON LAN” with gusto!

There is an excellent tackle by England 12, Max Clark, but another tackle by Wales’ Harri Keddie earns England a Penalty, for a tackle infringement, and advantage is played.

AN EMBARRASSING INCIDENT

An embarrassing incident occurred for one of the young England players during the driving maul!
I do not know who it was, because all that was visible of this player was his bottom! Literally!
His shorts were accidently pulled down by a teammate during the drive!

Back for the Penalty. Rory Jennings kicks, and adds 3 points to England’s score.

WALES U 20s, 21 ~ England u 20s, 15

Wales replace Barney Nightingale with Owen Watkin.
England replace Stu Townsend with James Mitchell.

AGGIE AGGIE AGGIE SING WELSH FANS!

Wales replace Joe Davies with Adam Beard

LAST 10 MINUTES
The game is now very intense with both teams fighting for all they are worth. A very exciting match to watch.

England’s Charlie Ewels touches down!
Are Wales’ chances of winning this game slipping away?

Miraculously, the ref blows his whistle for an infringement!
England's James Chisholm “knocked forward” so Ewels’ Try will not count!
A HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!!

More dangerous play by England, who will not go down without a fight!
England winger Howard Packman, in particular, is someone I think we shall be seeing a lot of at senior level!
A lot of toing and froing of ball possession, with kafuffles as well!

Fresh legs now, as Wales bring on Jordan Viggers for Tom Phillips. James Whittingham for Rhys Williams.

Scrum and tackles, as England advance dangerously, and England get a penalty, because Wales does not release in the tackle.

Rather than go for a penalty goal, as 3 points would not be enough to secure a win for England, they decide to go for a Try.

They kick for touch... line-out ... throw in... drive!

Ref’s whistle goes yet again! Wales’ GARYN SMITH is called!
Ref says Garyn has been involved in too many penalties, and this time it is a Wales player that is Yellow Carded! At this, the most crucial of moments, Wales is a man down!

Three and a half minutes to go! Can Wales hold on?

FRANTIC PLAY NOW.

First England get the ball, then Wales, and so on!
Dafydd Howells STEALS THE BALL BRILLIANTLY, but it’s knocked on!

England are again in ball possession.
Jordon Viggers turns the ball over ....and it’s Wales’ ball!
He passes to Scrum Half Tom Williams, who kicks it down field and away from the dangerous Tryline area. This does mean however, that the ball is back in English hands!

England are advancing again and throwing everything they have at the Welsh.

Two minutes to go!
What a tackle by Dafydd Howells!
The other Wales players are also defending valiantly and the ball is yet again in Wales' possession.

England get another Penalty. They kick for position, and it’s right on Wales Tryline!

THE CLOCK HAS TURNED RED!

Wales again get the ball, but England get a penalty for a line-out infringement.
England get to replay the Line-Out. England's Hooker throws in.
Miraculously, Wales' replacement, Joe Jones steals the ball!

England tackle for all they are worth.
ALL WALES NEED TO DO IS TO KICK THE BALL OUT OF PLAY!!!

"Doesn't matter who does it, doesn't matter where they do it" says the excited S4C Commentator (in Welsh)

Fly Half Dan Jones grabs the ball from the tackling players, throws to Jordan Viggers who kicks it out!

AND IT’S ALL OVER

WALES HAVE WON!

The Wales boys are besides themselves! Rejoicing, jubilation, shock... as if they can't quite believe they've done it! :-0 :-0
Jumping in the air! Running and hugging each other!

The English boys shake their hands in congratulations like true sportsmen. They must be disappointed! Chwarae Teg iddyn nhw! (Fair Play to them!)

Parc Eiras is in uproar! What a wonderful finish!:-) :-)

FINAL SCORE
