I won't appear on any census before 1991. It's the same census my two siblings will appear on for the first time too.

Londonbelle, it was impressed upon us that wherever possible we were to speak to someone. That way we picked up most of the houses where the owner/occupier had moved, and also ensured, as far as possible, that every household had a census form.

They posted them back and we then had to go round to collect the missing ones. I helped fill them in for people who were illiterate, didn't like forms or couldn't be bothered. Also a couple of Chinese who wanted to fill in the English version but didn't write English!! :-) :-)

Andysmum, that makes sense about when they were put in the letterboxes because I can only remember going to a few houses not streets of houses.....perhaps they were the houses that Dad couldn't get a reply :-)

The 1951 census is the one and only UK census that I will be on. We emigrated to Canada in 1952.

I don't know where I was on the 1951 census. I assume that 8th April was the school holidays, and Easter 1951 was when my parents decided to go their separate ways. I might have been at home, or I might have been at my grandmother's, where I was sent for a few days before going back to school.

I was an enumerator in 2001. We had to knock on every door, check that we had the right name for the householder and hand them the census forms. If there was no reply we had to try again on a different day and time, and only then were we allowed to post them through the letter-box. I remember "getting rid" of about 40 in one go because the houses hadn't yet been built!!

Not on the 1951 Census :-D

My Dad was an Enumerator for the 1961 Census.... I seem to recall helping him to post the census papers in people's letterboxes....might be wrong, afterall it was a long time ago and I was very young :-D
