What made me very wary of anyone taking any vitamin, mineral or herbal supplement or treatment on the suggestion of a non-medical person was my experiences when I became the de facto "poison information person" where I worked ............ the requests came usually came from the local Poison Control Centre as they did not always have the right references for some obscure possible poisoning, and it was purely and simply because I had a Botany degree, knew the names of plants, and we had some obscure plant books in our library!!

That led my boss and myself into an interest in herbs and herbal use, just as there was a great interest in returning to herbal remedies in the late 1960s and early 1970s ................. the herbal journals were suddenly carrying reports of people trying a herbal remedy for this ailment or that one but without having the accumulated knowledge of herbalists.

I hate to remember how many deaths were reported in England during the early 1970s for people (mainly women) trying an old herbal remedy for migraines.

One of the main problems is that the concentration of the organic compound in a plant can vary from plant part to plant part, from season to season, and from soil to soil.

Similarly mineral compositions and strengths can vary from place to place.

It's a minefield!

I myself do take supplements including vitamins and minerals such as selenium, zinc, chromium as well as calcium carbonate ......... but every one has been suggested by a doctor.

I also take glucosamine and chondroitin which has worked wonders for me over the last 20 years .............. but I no longer recommend them to other people since I discovered that people can be allergic to shark "bone" used in their manufacture.

EDIT:- it's shark cartilage that is used in the manufacture of Glucosamine and Chondroitin by most manufacturers

I did indeed post it wrong, my doctor did say there is NO medical reason as to why I am tired all the time, also pharmacist said not to take them (vit B12) until I’ve seen my doctor which is what I will be doing but not until I get back from my holiday in November. Thanks again everyone x.
