Do people actually take these messages seriously? I suppose some must fall for them otherwise they wouldn't keep sending them.

"Hello,
Greetings to you. I am Mr Francis Awua-Kyerematen a bank officer here in Accra - Ghana representing the Citi-Group . I am writing you in regards to an opportunity in my bank which will be of an immense benefit to both of us. It is about your last name which is the reason I contacted you.
A citizen of your country who has the same surname with you, had a fixed deposit with my bank in 2011 , valued at US$5,700,000.00 (Five Million,Seven Hundred Thousand United State Dollars) the due date for this deposit contract was last 22nd of January 2017. Sadly Peter was among the death victims in the February 06 2016 Earthquake disaster in Pingtung City, Taiwan that killed over 117 people. He was in Taiwan on a business trip and that was how he met his end. My bank management is yet to know about his death, I knew about it because he was my friend and I am his account officer. He did not mention any Next of Kin/ Heir when the account was opened, and he was not married and no children when I saw your last name I was happy and I am now seeking your co-operation to present you as Next of Kin/ Heir to the account, since you have the same last name with him and my bank head quarters will release the Fund to you, so I am suggesting we share the funds equal, 50/50 % to both parties. Let me know your mind on thi
Have a nice day and God bless. Anticipating your communication.
Regards,
Mr Francis Awua-Kyerematen"

My spam all appears to go into the junk folder :-D
Amongst the free casino trials, some Russian woman who wants to meet me, an offer of money to shop at Walmart, quotes for a new boiler and 'free gifts from Amazon', I found this one - it's quite interesting

They are a bit like fishing, if you are ok to put something in the swim and pay very close attention you can make a good catch. Always use a computer dedicated to to the task not on the same subnet as anything else.

Otherwise autospam will remove most of it.

A new Metro Bank branch has recently opened in our city, apparently at a cost of £30 million and great hullaballoo from the media.

In the past week I have received three separate emails from them requesting me to confirm various transactions allegedly made on 'my' account.

Coincidence or what?

please keep up ; these people can be suckered , the biter bit. Just be careful.
suggested search term: "honeytrap"

Only use machines configured as linux os for attack, never Windows. A bitcoin account can also be handy.

Good phishing.

Apparently I have a account had the Bank of Montreal and the Bank of Nova Scotia.
How knew. :-0

Also those poor children are still trying to get out of South Africa, with an American father they should be able to get in. :-(

Some get a lot of amusement by taking the p i ss out of 419 scammers (who are as likely to be based in Hackney as Lagos.)

Traditional pop3 email has pretty well had its day anyway there are other options.
