Gordon Sellick Baker was summoned by Ethel Kate Pester, for the maintenance of her illegitimate female child, of which alleged he was the father. Mr. J. F. Sanders appeared for the claimant. The paternity was admitted, and an order made for 2s 6d a week until the child attained the age of 14.

So are we looking for an illegitimate birth in1888/1889, or before that time?

Wm. Edgar Underhays, Totnes, was summoned by Esther Ann Pester, of Barnstaple, to show cause, &c. Mr. J. Bosson appeared for the complainant, and Mr. J. F. Bromham for the defendant. An order for the payment of half a crown a week and costs was made.

To go with maggiewinchester's suggestion, there are several illegitimate births in South Molton from 1881 to 1891. This one looks interesting, but will take time to research all of them:

My great grandmother lived in a small village in Suffolk.
In 1891, she is in Suffolk, aged 12.
In 1901, aged 22, she is in Bournemouth, working in a hotel (live in).
In Suffolk, there is a little girl, (Maud) living with her grandparents.
Research shows Maud is great grandmother's child.
Scandal? Move away!

As it happens, in Bournemouth, working in the same hotel, but living a street away, is the man who was to become my g granddad.
Later on, in 1901, they moved to Southampton.

A friend's ancestor, Esther Ann Pester, b. 1862, Rose Ash (Also known as Hester and Hettie) was still living there on the 1881 census, as a Domestic Servant.
In 1890 she married harry Frank Palk (widower since 1889) at Ashprington, Totnes - 70 miles away. I cannot find why she would make the journey. Her employer in 1881 was still in South Molton in 1891, so she didn't move because her employer(Farmer), did. Harry Frank Palk had been living at Ashprington area since birth. Also a farmer.
Thought she might have moved the 70 miles north with a family member, but there are no siblings around Totnes by 1891. Am open to suggestions!
