http://www.freebmd.org.uk
the Ancestry version is more complete.

mother's maiden name only on the index from 1912.
most of the time you can work it out from the marriage entry and/or census.
1881 census is free.

nb: birth certs have mother's maiden name NOT married name.

Welcome to the board Sarah Ann. Are you looking at the actual certificates or just the birth registration?

If the latter, take a look on the GRO index here https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ you have to register but it's free and you should be able to find mother's maiden name there ( 1837-1915) , as an example you should see something like this

name: Mother's Maiden Surname: Order:
FISHLOCK, WILLIAM ( mmn) THOMAS Order
GRO Reference: 1837 S Quarter in BRENTFORD Volume 03 Page 18

I should also add, don't keep two threads (one on this board and one on find ancestors) running at the same time though it will cause confusion.

Hello Sarah, welcome to Genes general chat thread. If you look to your left you will see a list Click on find Ancestors and, if meanwhile nobody has offered help on this board somebody will probably be around on that one. Good luck with your searching.

Hello all. I'm new to genes reunited and I'm just trying to put my family tree together.

I wonder if some one could give me some advice. I've managed to put most of the immediate people onto my tree up to my grandparents. However after them I'm having difficulty, as when I look at their birth certificate there is no mention of the mothers maiden name. Therefore I have hit a brick wall. It seems that later births have the mothers maiden name but not before .
There isn't really many people I can ask left in the family so I wondered if somebody could give me some help please.
Thank you kind regards Sarah
