how can you find out if achild has been adopted when their mother has remarried

Look for their birth reg on
If there’s a S/ or /S as part of the reference number, that usually indicates they’ve officially been adopted.
At some point in the 20th Century the S was dropped from the index. If you were to send for a copy you might find that the adoption had been notated onto it. It won’t give the new name.

Official adoption wasn’t recorded until c1923. Prior to that there is no indication of the fact.
